As expected, Hulu has launched its “Hulu Plus” premium subscription service, which is currently invitation-only (you can request an invite here). The service will cost $9.99 per month and will offer full seasons of popular NBC, Fox and ABC shows such as Glee, The Office, House and Modern Family in 720p HD. Access to more than 2,000 episodes of older shows such as Arrested Development and The X-files will also be available to subscribers.

Online video continues to grow in popularity, with the latest indication coming from a survey conducted by research firm Frank N. Magid Associates. According to the survey, 50% of internet users are watching video on the web at least on a weekly basis.

Movie>Q is a small movie and video game rental chain with a few locations in Southern California. It combines the automated kiosk experience of Redbox with the large selection of titles offered by brick-and-mortar video stores. Movie>Q president and CEO Joe Malugen is one of the co-founders of the now-defunct Movie Gallery/Hollywood Video chain.
Home Media Magazine recently sat down with Malugen and got his take on why his old company failed, how his new company can compete in the evolving home entertainment marketplace, and what he thinks about teetering titan Blockbuster’s chances of survival. Here are some highlights:
Hulu, the second-largest online streaming site in the country after YouTube, has already announced that it is profitable. The highly popular site, which streams more than a billion videos every month, may soon be offering a subscription service.
Blockbuster’s annual shareholder meeting brought to a close the months-long battle between dissident shareholder Gregory Meyer, who was vying for a seat on the board, and other directors led by BB CEO Jim Keyes. Meyer was given the eighth seat on Blockbuster’s newly expanded board of directors, and the company’s shareholders also approved a proposal to collapse BB’s A and B shares into one common stock issue, as well as approving a potential reverse stock split.
In its latest effort to leverage its brand beyond its dwindling brick-and-mortar business, Blockbuster has joined forces with Verizon Wireless to offer its Blockbuster On Demand download service on Verizon devices, starting with the just-announced Droid X.

The concisely named “Blockbuster On Demand presented by V Cast Video” service will offer major studio new release titles the same day they are released for sale on DVD and BD.
The latest entrant jostling for a seat at the video-on-demand table is none other than venerable retailer Sears. The company has signed an agreement with Sonic Solutions to incorporate Sonic’s Roxio streaming technology into TVs, Blu-ray players and mobile phones sold by Sears.
With a critical shareholder meeting just days away and his cash-strapped company on the brink, Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes remains (at least on the outside) upbeat and bullish on his company’s prospects. Says Keyes:
“The reason I took the job is the same reason why I’m optimistic about the long-term future of Blockbuster . . . The industry is in transition . . . but in change, there is opportunity.”
