A group of Hollywood studios has come to an agreement with DirecTV to launch a new premium video-on-demand service in late April. The move has apparently blindsided theater owners, who have lashed out against what they perceive as studio myopia.

If you’re a kiosk fan and want to get your new releases sooner, Blockbuster Express has some good news for you. The NCR-owned kiosks will be expanding their offerings of movie rentals available the same day that they are released for sale.

VBG President Ted Engen

Long a vicious opponent of Redbox and its ilk, it seems the Video Buyers Group (VBG) is feeling the pain of the widespread decline of the traditional video store. The VBG has canceled its upcoming annual confab, blaming a tough economy, rising travel costs and “everything” that is occurring in the video industry.

Confirming the speculation and rumors, Amazon has beaten rivals Apple and Google to the punch with the launch of its “Cloud Drive” digital media locker. Cloud Drive offers 5 GB of free storage and additional space can be purchased at a yearly rate of $1 per GB.

Warner seems to be encouraged enough by the response to The Dark Knight streaming on Facebook that it is adding five more of its titles to the social networking site. The movies include the first two Harry Potter films, as well as Inception, Life as We Know It and Yogi Bear.

As with The Dark Knight, the each title can be rented on its own Facebook page for 30 Facebook credits or $3. The movies expire after 48 hours, and can be resumed after pausing by logging back in to Facebook.

Despite the studios’ best efforts to get movie sales back to the levels of their early-2000s heyday, consumers seem mostly content to rent and stream content these days. Sony Pictures isn’t giving up though, and has slightly dropped digital download pricing on two titles compared to their DVD versions in an attempt to stimulate consumer buying interest.

When it comes to the potential impact to Netflix from the recent announcement of a Starz content delay, global investment firm Goldman Sachs is saying “meh”.  The firm has offered three reasons why it believes Netflix won’t feel any pain from the delay.

NCR, who most Insiders will remember is the ATM manufacturer who licenses the BB name for its Blockbuster Express kiosks, is trying a new strategy to increase its kiosk footprint. NCR is trying to entice retailers to free up shelf space currently dedicated to DVDs and other disc-based media by selling the stores vending machines.
