Even though its past efforts to charge for content haven’t fared well, Google-owned YouTube more than doubled its revenue last year. Google CFO Patrick Pichette let the news slip at the end of his company’s recent earnings call that the world’s largest video site had seen a massive increase in its revenue.

Amazon Purchases Lovefilm

For some time now, Amazon has been considered a potential buyer for Netflix. With Netflix’s stock rising more than 250% in the last year, Amazon has likely missed its chance to pick up Netflix cheaply. Amazon has made another acquisition in the same vein, however: UK-based streaming and DVD-by-mail company Lovefilm.

As Netflix continues its shift away from by-mail DVD rental and towards a streaming-dominated model, it will be hard-pressed to maintain its current margins. So says Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, who believes that Netflix will have difficulty keeping up its current pace of growth beyond the next year or so.

Certain analysts weren’t the only ones to jump on the news that Redbox parent Coinstar was lowering the expectations for its upcoming Q4 2010 numbers. The Video Buyers Group (VBG), an outspoken opponent of the Redbox model, has been quick to claim a victory for the independent video store.

Becoming as predictable as the rising of the sun, bankrupt Blockbuster has once again requested additional time from its creditors to extricate itself from Chapter 11. BB has also requested more than $200 million from its bondholders to assist with its recovery.
