We spend a fair amount of time on this site chronicling the seemingly eternal downward spiral of Blockbuster Video. The nation’s largest video rental chain (at least for now) is increasingly perceived by consumers and investors alike as an anachronistic dinosaur from another time, destined for obsolescence and extinction as surely as the terrible lizards of the Mesozoic.

Redbox to Offer Blu-ray in 2010?

According to Redbox executives consulted by Home Media Magazine, part of the reasoning behind Redbox’s recent deal with Warner was that it would lead to greater access to Warner’s Blu-ray catalog. The unnamed executives stated that Redbox is planning to integrate BD rentals, which up until now have been limited to test markets, across its entire kiosk network by the middle of this year.

The high-definition discs will likely come at a higher rental price, similar to the premium Netflix charges its subscribers for Blu-ray access.

HBO Launches Streaming Service

HBO has taken a large step into the digital realm with the launch of its HBO Go streaming service. The new service provides 600 hours of movies and HBO series that can be streamed live and in high definition.

According to one analyst, a 30-day block on new release titles could cost the Redbox up to 50% of its revenue. Pali Capital analyst Richard Greenfield, who along with half of Hollywood is bearish on the company’s $1 business model, believes that if Redbox were to yield to mounting pressure and accept a delayed rental window on new releases, the impact to the company’s revenue would be much higher than the 10% Redbox claims. After a banner year of ever-increasing DVD Rentals, Redbox is looking beyond physical media and into digital distribution, according to one analyst. D.A. Davidson & Co analyst John Kraft says that Rebox will not “sit on the sidelines” when it comes to digital delivery, and is exploring distribution via SD cards, USB drives and other devices. The Hollywood Three get so much coverage on this site that we sometimes overlook the fact that not all of the studios are opposed to Redbox. Lionsgate, for example, has signed a five-year, 8 million deal with the kiosk operator, and the agreement appears to be bearing fruit.
