According to an article in the Wall Street Journal (subscription required), Redbox has recently made deals with several top movie studios. This comes at a time when things seems to be getting worse with Universal…

Why would these top studios – Disney, Sony and Lionsgate – make these deals? Well, it seems DVD sales are down about 14% so far in 2009, and these studios would rather sell DVDs to Redbox then no one.

What these deals actually mean for Redbox is unclear, but it is likely Redbox will be getting DVDs from these studios at a better price than they were previously, giving them better margins, which means higher profits.

I am sure Redbox would like to secure some exclusive deals from certain studios in the future, similar to the deal Blockbuster has had with The Weinstein Company for the past few years. This would really put Redbox over the top and cause them to continue to gain ground over Blockbuster.

For now, though, Redbox just needs to be able to secure more new releases than they have been.

If you have 7Eleven stores in your area, they have the Unborn and
will be getting Fast and Furious next week. They rent movies for
$1 a day, like Redbox, so you can get it cheap.
    (Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Missouri)
Family Video’s $2.59 price tag ( for 2 days rental) makes me want
to wait until they lower it to $1 ( a month later).

I too would like to see Redbox get more TV Shows. Hopefully they can strike
a deal with Fox ( Prison Break, Dollhouse, House, Family Guy) and
get more in the kiosks. Certainly the Disney deal will net more
ABC Studios stuff, possibly TV ( Grey’s anantomy, Private Practice?)
    I hope….

The 7Eleven stores in my area (DFW,Texas) have Redboxes so what kiosks do they have in your area at the 7Elevens?

I’ve yet to see a Redbox (or any other kiosk) at a 7-11 in Oklahoma City.

Instead there is a rack of DVD covers along one wall. You take the cover to the clerk and they hand you the DVD (which is kept behind the counter.)

I don’t know what is going on, but it is major!
    Even Netflix, after a small complaint I had sent them by phone;
    they send me:
4 or the newest DVD releases…

    Haunting in Conn.
    Watchmen
    Coraline

    Oooweee, am stoked,
not having to wait weeks for these new releases…
Keep it up RedBox you are making changes
for the good for all of us!!!!

    Love it!

that’s too bad, because some new releases by redbox are disappointed like Backwoods, a low budget independent movie. Although, if redbox has more contract with studios there’s probably not enough room for the 700 movies in one machines with popular titles, and usually redbox movies good for rent is 3months long..what they do with the old movies that didn’t sell or no longer renting?

I am pretty new with this redbox thing, but I am trying to find out why the kiosks all say fast and furious released today but I can’t find it anywhere or on the website. Does anyone know what is going on with this?

Heres some movies they never got that they should have:
    1. The Echelon Consiracy
    2. The Great Buck Howard
    3. The Fall
    4. S. Darko
    5.The Sensation of Sight
    6. Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour
    7. Special
    8. The Burrowers
    9. The Last Word

T.V. shows aren’t worth renting unless you get a whole season at a time.

Oh, and Redbox REALLY needs to figure out a way to give you BOTH discs when a movie is released that way. I hate not seeing all the special fetures on the second discs of movies.
