One of the presumed targets of Best Buy’s new CinemaNow store is by-mail and streaming giant Netflix. According to The Motley Fool, however, it’s not Netflix that should be worried about the new service, but other video renters, including Redbox.

Bucking industry trends towards a more windowed approach, Disney is planning on making its hit film Alice in Wonderland available to Redbox and Netflix the same day it is for sale on DVD and BD, June 1.

There’s still a chance, of course, that the studio could make an 11th-hour delay deal the way Fox did with Avatar recently. Such a move, says BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield, might have a domino affect on Hollywood holdouts to the windowing structure. Read the rest of this entry »

The only serious challenger to try to muscle in on Redbox’s kiosk turf has been ATM manufacturer NCR’s Blockbuster Express business.

Best Buy has announced the availability of its new digital download service, which will be called CinemaNow. “Beginning this month”, according to Best Buy’s press release, the service will be included on all new web-enabled LG home theater devices, and will also be coming shortly to other brands, including Best Buy’s own Insignia label.

How will Best Buy’s new VOD service fare against iTunes, Amazon and other competitors, Insiders? With several new release titles available for download the day they are released for sale, Best Buy will have an advantage over Redbox and Netflix with many titles. Silicon Valley startup mSpot has launched a native iPhone app that allows users to rent and stream movies directly to their devices over 3G or Wi-Fi. Prices range from $1.99 to $4.99 and the rentals are good for a 24-hour period. The mSpot library at launch consists of about 900 titles from such studios as Universal, Paramount and Disney.
