On its march to an installed base of 10,000 kiosks by the end of 2010, NCR’s Blockbuster Express has struck a deal to place kiosks at 105 Tom Thumb and Randalls stores in Dallas, Houston and Austin. This is the first major expansion of the BB Express network into the Lonestar State.

Apple may soon be battling its erstwhile ally Google for dominance in the living room. While the two have been tussling for months now with their iPhone/Android rivalry, a new report says that set-top boxes may be the next battlefield for these two tech titans.

Engadget, citing a tip confirmed by “a source very close to Apple” is reporting that the next version of Apple TV will be much smaller and sleeker and could compete directly with Google’s upcoming Google TV platform.

Netflix: DVD Biz to Peak in 2013

Netflix’s DVD by-mail business has fewer than three years of growth left in it before it peaks and goes into a protracted decline, according to a “Business Opportunity” slideshow put out by the company. Netflix plans to “gain and maintain leadership” in the streaming sector, according to the slideshow, and become the dominant player in the business of “consumer-paid streaming of movies and TV shows.”

PepsiCo (makers Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Lays, Cheetos, etc.) has teamed up with Redbox to offer free DVD rentals. Under the terms of the new promotion, customers who purchase three or more Pepsi or Frito Lay products at Kroger stores will earn a free one-night Redbox movie rental. The “Make it a Movie Night” promotion began earlier this month and runs through 2010.

Google’s recently announced Google TV platform could prove to be dangerous to Redbox and Netflix by providing wider access to video-on-demand, according to one analyst.

William Blair & Co. analyst Ralph Schackart believes that Google’s new platform could enable Hollywood to “deliver less expensive (higher margin) VOD movies directly through connected TVs.” Schackart argues that such an eventuality would be detrimental to Redbox and Netflix’s market share. As the icy waters of retail death engulf Movie Gallery/Hollywood Video, Merriman Curhan Ford analyst and frequent Redbox commenter Eric Wold says that the kiosk renter should see a major revenue boost. Wold believes that former Movie Gallery and Hollywood Video customers will gravitate towards Redbox and Netflix as more and more retail locations are closed.
