3D content from a cable or satellite provider is preferable to more consumers than content on DVD or Blu-ray discs, if a new survey from Quixel Research is to be believed. The online study polled 1,000 HDTV owners regarding their opinions on 3D technology. Reported by trade publication Twice, the study found that “more than three-fourths of consumers would rather receive 3D content via their cable or satellite provider compared with those respondents who prefer Blu-ray/DVD.”

Blockbuster Launches iPhone App

graduation_capParamount Home Entertainment’s recent extension of its trial deal with Redbox was an astute decision, even if it may not be in the best interests of Hollywood at large. So says Richard Greenfield, an analyst with Pali Capital. One major reason for Greenfield’s assessment is the fact that as part of the agreement, Redbox is obiligated to showcase films that failed at the box office, which can help Paramount recoup its investment.

blockbusterEver visit a rental store to pick up a movie you are excited about, only to discover that it’s out of stock? The nation’s largest movie rental chain plans to ameliorate that problem with a new service called Direct Access. Blockbuster’s new service went live today, and puts every film in the company’s 95,000-plus catalog within a few days’ reach of its B&M customers.

According to Video Business, the program “lets customers order movies that are out of stock in their store and receive it by mail within three mailing days at no extra charge and without the requirement of being in enrolled in Blockbuster’s Total Access by-mail program”. Champagne glasses are surely clinking at the Redbox offices today, as Paramount has announced that it will extend its relationship with Redbox for at least another six months. The highly anticipated decision from Paramount comes at a time when most other studios have clearly stepped to one side or another of the Redbox line, with Sony, Disney and Lionsgate making deals with the kiosk renter and the notorious Hollywood Three (Warner, Fox, Universal) in adamant opposition.

Redbox Passes 22,000 Kiosks

Familiar to millions

All apologies to Alabama fans, but the real crimson tide sweeping the nation these days is made of DVD rental machines. Coinstar, Redbox’s parent company, announced yesterday that it has outpaced its end-of-year projections for kiosk placement and the company now has more than 22,210 kiosks in operation.
