Blockbuster can’t wait to disable Netflix’s spaceship and leave its rival marooned on a desolate planet—at least when it comes to movie streaming. Jim Keyes, CEO of Blockbuster, says that when the day comes when consumers have a choice between Blockbuster and Netflix’s online streaming services, there will be no contest.

From the “As if the market wasn’t crowded enough already” file comes news that Sony plans to get into the digital content delivery business. In a recent interview, Sony executive VP Kaz Hirai stated that his company hopes to launch an online content service by early 2010.
A few weeks ago we reported that Redbox was the subject of a class action lawsuit claiming that it has illegally collected $100 million in fees. According to the filing:
“While it boasts ‘easy $1 a night DVD rentals’ ‘with no late fees…ever,’ that is not the truth. . . Instead, Redbox charges its customers who return a movie even one minute late a late fee in the form of an illegal penalty.”
Brent Coon & Associates, the lawyers behind the suit, have now created a website promoting their cause. Read the rest of this entry »

Because of the new release delays imposed on it by three major studios, Redbox has had to become creative to obtain desirable titles the first weeks they are out. Several weeks ago, financial services firm Merriman Curhan Ford found that Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, a popular animated film, was only stocked in around two-thirds of the more than 50 Redbox kiosks it checked. On November 14, the firm checked the same kiosks again and found the DVD stocked in 94% of the boxes.
For consumers who like their video-on-demand piping hot and fresh, November’s going to be a great month. This month will see a higher number of same-day VOD and DVD releases than any other month to date. Studios, along with cable and satellite providers, are going to be massively hyping new releases coming out on VOD and DVD simultaneously.

Nothing is going to usher in wider adoption of broadband internet more quickly than online video streaming, says Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. At the NewTeeVee Live conference this week, Hastings called his company’s streaming video service “a killer app for broadband data”. According to Hastings, the main reason customers upgrade to faster internet service isn’t because of email or basic web surfing—it’s because of bandwidth-demanding video streaming such as Netflix’s service.
