It looks like Universal is finally willing to sit down with Redbox and discuss a possible settlement regarding the lawsuit Redbox filed last year.

Redbox sued Universal in October 2008 over new revenue-sharing terms they were imposing on kiosk operators, saying they violate anti-trust laws and misuse copyrights. The restrictions Universal wants to impose include not allowing kiosk operators like Redbox to stock their DVDs until 45 days after their release, limiting the number of DVDs allowed in each kiosk, and requiring the destruction of old inventory (instead of allowing it to be sold). Universal admits no wrong-doing and filed a motion to dismiss the case.

A letter filed by Redbox on Monday, Feb 23 with the US District Court in Delaware explains:

A recent “enhancement” of the Blockbuster Total Access plan is angering many of their customers.

The plan – which distinguishes itself from Netflix by allowing free, in-store exchanges – used to ship a new movie from a customer’s queue when they dropped off their envelope at a local Blockbuster store. The new terms of service tell a different story…

I just got an email from Redbox that explains what is going on with the 60 older movies added to Redbox kiosks today…

Redbox announces "Redbox Replay"

Personally, I don’t know if I will rent any of these, but perhaps if something comes along that I would love to see and it is convenient, I may change my mind.

I think this program is more geared to those who just go to browse at a Redbox kiosk. If they don’t find the new release they are looking for, a “big name” older title may get them to rent something, more so than some of the direct-to-video and B-movie discs.

So far we have seen mixed reviews here on the site about this. I guess all that really matters is if people rent them or not, so if they disappear in the future, we know it didn’t work out.

So, there you have it. Do you think you might check out some of these titles?

Here is your Monday promo code for today. Enjoy your free Redbox rental!

Redbox to Test Higher Blu-ray Prices

As part of their earnings announcement yesterday, Redbox also mentioned more about their Blu-ray roll out. They have decided they would test Blu-ray rentals at higher prices, but they haven’t decided what those prices would be.

Hopefully they will start releasing Blu-ray in more locations, as I have not seen any here in Utah yet. Have you seen Blu-ray where you are?

Also, how much do you think is a fair price for Redbox to charge for Blu-ray rentals? How much would you be willing to pay? Personally, I think $1.50 would be a great price point. I would definitely pay that. Much higher than that and I may think twice about it. How about you?
