Redbox has sent out an email to many of its customers with a free promo code for today. This comes after a major mess-up on Monday with codes, as well as after many complained that their local Redbox was full and they could not return their movies.
Does this make up for the inconvenience of the past few days for you? What else could Redbox do to improve the situation?
Get the full text of the email (including the promo code) after the break.
Dear Customer,
We understand that some redbox locations in your area were full as the high number of DVDs redbox rented over the New Year’s holiday were returned. We apologize if you experienced a problem returning your movie. You may contact us via email at questions@redbox.com if you have any questions or concerns.
As our thanks to you as a loyal customer, we’d like you to enjoy a movie on redbox. Please use this code RBX2NITE to receive a free one night rental*.

It’s all great but I didn’t get it until 6:30 at night and had already reserved movies online today. What am I supposed to do with it now when I only have 3 hours to use it up!?
Unbelievable. They send out a free code, which is only good for about six hours. I got the email at 7pm EST and it expires at 1am EST. Why even bother?
The promo code is not only for tonight…..
Actually, according to the small print at the bottom, it IS only valid for tonight.
– John…
Received message @ 6:40PM, EXP 11:59PM.
Received 7:25pm. Just used it.
got end game (kurt angle movie) and some mike judge comedy)
im out of ideas of movies … been 3 free codes the last 3 days so 6 free movies for me these last 3 days + nothing good coming out \= renting pure junk LOL
Saw the code here then used it around 6p. Worked fine for me.
Here’s a thought: I got the free code when I checked my email 10 mins ago. With only an 1hr and 15 minutes to use it, I decided I’ll pass on it.
WHY?
Because Redbox is such a good deal to me, that If I miss a code here of there,
so what? I know there will be more down the line. And even if I don’t get a code
( which I won’t for Friday) I’ll still rent a movie tomorrow (Friday)
because $1 a night beats every other rental outlet ( Blockbuster, Hollywood)
around me.
Using all the free codes listed (including this one just e-mailed to me)
I have caught up on all the B-movies in the kiosk normally
that I would not rent;
all in all about 20 movies for one week;
uhhh,
don’t think NetFlix or Blockbuster could ever beat that.
whoopee!
I wish they would have given me atleast 24 hours to use the code. I got it at 7:25 CST shortly after I got home from driving on bad snowy roads. If they’d given it to me earlier i would have picked one up while I was out but a free movie isn’t worth risking my life (quite literally) on bad roads. I think it was meant to make them look good but they hoped it would be too late for people to use. I mean really….it was valid for less than 5 hours!
GETTING REAL TIRED OF THEIR FOOLISHNESS. THIS CODE BUSINESS IS NOT LIKE IT USE TO BE.
All these people crying over a free code bet they say nothing when they pay their cable or internet bill
Thank you Tuna! I completely agree. I think redbox should send out codes with a 30 minute window. haha that way if you really want that DVD you have to get off our …. and go get it before someone else does. lol.
I think they were just trying to clean out some space in their machines since many were full. Why else send out a code that lasts less time than a movie rental.
Personally I have codes that I also got from McDonalds that I have never been able to use sense you can ONLY use them at McD’s. I have also switched over to Netflix, you get a wider selection and for a small amount of money a month you get more for you money. I’m finding with the Redbox that half the time I can’t find a movie I want to watch and when you have 5 Redboxes and you STILL can’t find a movie, there’s a problem.
Redbox, you just lost a customer.
Thanks for the code…but all the local rebox kiosks were out of order. When I called to see what was going on…I was on hold for 10 minutes plus.
Same thing here got it sometime after six a clock a free rental isn’t worth a ten minute drive back into town. What a waste!
I just used the e-mail code at my local Albertsons this morning (1-8-10)
and the kiosk operator was there and he said that most of the machines
were broken just after the holiday from overload conditions;
evidently they stocked the machines full for the holidays;
and people kept the movies longer and brought back 2-3 all at one time,
which broke the machines because they put in the new Tues. releases
in at about the same time.
BTW, just got Final Destination with the promo code;
which was not listed on the kiosk or my computer yesterday.
My wife got this code just as she was leaving work for the day. She used it to get a free DVD, but before she could grab it from the machine, it quickly sucked back in! Then it wouldn’t let her use the code again and she had to pay for a rental instead. She called Redbox about this and they won’t credit us for it. What a bunch of BS. They can kiss my you-know-what, I’m taking my business elsewhere.
OMG! you were gonna get the movie for free with the code and if you hadn’t had the code you were gonna have to pay the 1.00 for it anyway. you are whining about a $1 credit that you didn’t receive…???? If I was redbox I would prefer you take you business elsewhere!
because you’re an idiot. now that the free codes are only once a month and cannot be exchanged, i’d rather get as many as i want 3 at a time from blockbuster. one free movie a weeks is the LEAST they can do to compensate those of us who rent more than a few movies from them a week which cost us way more than $1. and for my family members without cell phones, they will not get free rental codes even once a month anymore because we cannot share the one time only codes. we will all be taking our business elsewhere…….
so yeah, i’m SO sure they would like us to take our business elsewhere, ALL of us, where we can get much better customer service!
Redbox- start acting like you are competent to run this company. codes sent at 7PM Monday evening, then emailed at 6:30 PM on Thursday aren’t appreciated and only irritated me.
I’m going to rant for a minute, because on Jan 3rd, Sunday, I stood in 3 lines at 3 different machines trying to return movies. There were 12-14 people in every line, as the machines were full, but when people were trying to return their movies, no appropriate message appeared on-screen. Several people spent several attempts in insert their movies, as those behind them became irrate in the frigid weather. Additionally, people who wanted to rent merely left, further hurting revenues.
Calls to Redbox Customer Service not answered that day- because of high call traffic, compounding the problems.
Redbox- New Years Eve is the biggest rental day of the year, hands down. To not be better prepared and have field reps service machines more frequently that weekend shows your incomptence. Have you not learned from your history how to handle holidays better?
Lastly, to send me rental codes in the evening that are only good for a few more hours is another sign of incompetence. Get it together!
to Kiki49, you sound crazy. if you dont like their service go somewhere else like blockbuster. dont complain about redbox. and definitly dont complain about getting a free DVD code. ITS FREE. they shouldn’t even have free dvd codes. imagine if blockbuster just started giving away free dvds for one night. there store shelves would be empty.
I love redbox. I love paying $1 to get 1 movie for 1 night. if you dont liek that then shop else where. I think redbox is doing a great job and so glad i recently signed up with them.
Obviously they weren’t doing a great job in her area. Everyone’s entitled to complain, especially about a bad situation, but I guess you never complain about anything. Oh, wait you just did. To paraphrase you, “Don’t complain about Kiki49’s complaint.” and “If you don’t like that read elsewhere.”
I’m in a bad mood, but you’re just plain rude and insensitive about other people’s problems.
Now you can go out and kick the poor homeless guy living in the alley.
Jeff- my point is that redbox should be prepared over holidays to handle the crush of returns- and they were not in my area. I could care less about the 1.00 free coupon codes, although sending them out Monday and Thursday late in the evening is poor customer service. I’m not sure why Jeff, you think they “shouldn’t even have free dvd codes”. My point is, if they bother to send them out, customers should have ample time to redeem those, especially since Thursday’s code was supposed to make up for the full machines.
Don’t tell me to not complain about Redbox, when they should have managed their business better. I stood in line with dozens of customers trying to return their DVD’s in vain because 3 machines I visited ( along with many other customers) were completely full, and their phone lines were jammed with calls. Just because rentals are 1.00 a day doesn’t excuse them from their responsibilities to their customers. And Jeff, if people like us don’t bother to give them feedback, things won’t improve, since the last time I checked the actual redbox machines can’t explain to their corporate office the near chaos I saw last weekend
well said – I gave feedback directly to the customer service and they took it down to hopefully improve things. Yes, customers are entitled to their opinion so complaining about their complaints seems silly. I was disappointed yesterday when the redbox code I was saving up for was only good for a few hours on Thursday. Luckily, I remembered another code that worked.
Blockbuster does give out free dvds it is called a coupon and I have recieved several I use them when I don’t have a redbox code and still get a free dvd.
Jeff-redbox isn’t give free codes out of the goodness of their heart. They are doing it as a form of advertisment, as a way to gain a market share. When an advertisment creates bad will among their customers, it is a sign of incompetence or poor management of a company. The idea of an advertisment is to gain customers not lose them.
So it sounds like this code is still working today (January 8th).
On the topic of what they could do in the case the box is full, they should still read the DVD, and record that you attempted to return it. Then you could return it the next day without being charged for it.
FYI, this code has been extended until midnight tonight, January 8th. Redbox just sent me an email after I wrote them last night.
O i can see the nasy emails they will get now
Before…
You send me an email saying the coupon is only good until midnight tonight and i only got 2 hours to use it You #$#$#$#….
now they exteneded it…
Now
I had to go rent junk cause you said the coupon expired last night i could of got something better tonight you #$#$#$#$#
lol
I received an e-mail from Redbox with the code at midnight 1/8 (EST) that says the code expires at 11:59pm 1/7 (CST) which only allowed 1 hour to use. I wasn’t going to go to the store that late just for a free rental!
Seems to me like Redbox is having lots of problems lately…
Hi everyone I am new to this but hay if you can get something free take it now days anyway.$1.00 is dollar saved.ok i want to ask something.you say that you can use one card and thats it can you take that card and the new code to a deffent store and use it?how can anyone keep renting free when you have to have a deffent card ever time you use the code?so after you have used say redboxs and put your card and code.. you can only get 1 movie and you can not use that redbox agin.unless you have a deffent card.I don’t see how you can rent that many movies if thats the case.sorry i am new like I said any help I would me greatfull.and when I signed up they said that I would get a new code every monday?
THANKS
One time use codes can only be used once by one person (though, occasionally they’ll work once or twice more). Other codes like DVDONME, BREAKROOM and DVDATWAG can be used once per debit or credit card by anyone and everyone. Basically, if you’ve got 5 credit cards you can use DVDONME once with each card (same with the other two codes and similar multi use codes) and you can rent all 5 dvds at the same machine or different ones, it doesn’t matter.
They don’t do a new code every Monday anymore. Now it’s only the first Monday of the month and it’s a one time use code that’s sent to your cell phone IF you’ve signed up for that at redbox.com.
i will try that code today hopefully it will work.
In my experience you can use a code at least 2 or 3 days past the “Offer expires” date when they e-mail you a code.
But this oversight of not telling people the correct and actual expiration date is really lame.
And it doesn’t matter anyway, nothing good to see this week.
I recieved the code about 8pm to expire @ 12am and it was too late to go out in the artic blast to use it. I wish they would have made it good through the weekend that might have made up for the snafu.
I called on Monday the 4th of Jan to let them know all red boxes within a reasonable distance from my home were full. I was on hold for 30 min. But when I got threw they emailed me four free codes because I had 2 late fee’s and had to pay for 2 that I used a free code for. I have been told (not by red box) that the box works were if it is full you can rent a DVD and it opens a space. Then you can return your other DVD. I am not 100% sure this is accurate but it has been working for me when they are full. If this is so it is quite the scam to make you buy more. If I wasn’t getting these for free in I would be annoyed. :)
When you cann’t return your movies because of the machines being broken, they shouldnot charge for an extra day rental. It’s common sense.
I still prefer a brick and mortar dvd rental shop. I wasn’t freezing, they answered questions about movies and my dvds ACTUALLY WORKED! I’m gonna miss the Mom and Pop places
I still prefer Redbox $1 price over the high rental price of brick and mortar stores! Just this past Monday I stopped at my local Hollywood Video to see what they now charge for rentals in the anticipation that Redbox wouldn’t get The Hurt Locker on Tuesday release day. Hollywood Video was like $4.89 for new release rentals!!!, or like $3 if you signed up for some frequent rental plan. I was anticipating that The Hurt Locker was one new release I’d be willing to pay a higher price for on day one of its release–BUT NOT $5 to rent it!!! Then Redbox ended up having The Hurt Locker at all my local kiosks on Tuesday anyway! Lesson learned: I’ll put up with the freezing weather, present crappy kiosk and customer service problems Redbox seems to be experiencing at the moment as long as they compensate by keeping their rental price at $1.
Why everybody complain about this promo codes?…At least eventually we will get at least 1 movie for free monthly..Who said Blockbuster care about all of us?…Be happy Only in America,Dude!!
THIS WEBSITE IS USELESS.
WHERE IS ALL THE FREE CODES FOR REDBOX MOVIES.
WE DON’T WANT TO READ STORIES.
WE WANT CODES !!!!!!!
try clicking on “Redbox Codes” up at the top. and they can’t post generic codes when there are none available.
If you post a code and can only use it at a certain location please put where the code can be used. Thanks (tried 3HY2VE27 at Walmart and said invalid location)
I didn’t get a code – nor have I ever gotten one from RedBox even though I am signed up and am supposed to get them periodically. Also . . . lately I have been very dissappointed in their new releases – what they post as new releases is nowhere near the number of actual new releases. They also don’t carry any of the many, many wonderful cable movies, miniseries, etc. Yes, they only charge $1, but that’s ‘per night’ so you have to make really sure that you are going to get the movie back right away otherwise you end up spending much more than any other venue. That, plus the fact that the movie selection just keeps getting worse and worse over time makes me feel like I never want to use RedBox again. And, indeed, my use of their system has greatly diminished. The only thing that occassionally makes me go back is if I get a free code – that doesn’t speak highly of a company if you only want to do business with them when it’s free. Incidentally, most of the ‘free’ codes offered here on RedBox and elsewhere never work. I’ve had them work maybe 25% of the time – hardly worth the bother of researching them and holding up the line (at the Kiosk) while you try to get them to work.
I think I’m going back to Netflix – as soon as I’m ready for a slew of great movies again. RedBox will only be an occasional venture – one which I will on occasion regret.
McDonalds code works, did you try that? But you have to read and understand that people have posted that it only works at McDonalds.
Oh, and you have to look and see if people have reported that it’s working lately. Is that so hard?
Jeez.. this sounds like the insideWHINEbox website… you people complain about your free codes when Redbox is an amazing deal compared with just a few years ago… $5.00 for three nights at Blockbuster. Come on, grow up.
Wow. People complaining, ABOUT complaining. Do you not see how stupid you sound? Obviously, they are dissatisfied. People have the right to complain, you all sure do. And this is one of the most ridiculous comments I’ve seen yet:
“All these people crying over a free code bet they say nothing when they pay their cable or internet bill.”
There’s only one difference: Our cable company didn’t tell us our bill was going to be free. If my cable company said my bill is going to be such and such this month, then I get the bill and it’s more, yeah, I call and complain. Everyone does.
You make it sound like we went up to them and said “hey redbox, give me a free movie now, or else.”
IF you are going to offer something to somebody, do it, and do it right. Simple.
