As it continues to expand and add new locations, Redbox is also doubling up kiosks at many of its existing locations. By installing multiple kiosks at the same location, Redbox is able to facilitate quicker returns and shorter lines, both of which are advantages typically enjoyed by brick-and-mortar video stores.

Merriam Curhan Ford analyst Eric Wold offered the following on Redbox’s kiosk multiplication efforts:

“Not only did [Redbox] management reiterate to us their belief that the U.S. DVD kiosk market can support at least 60,000 locations, but they have found that adding a second kiosk to a proven location provided a much higher initial return and quicker payback than installing a kiosk at an unproven location,”

How many double Redbox kiosks are there near you, Insiders? Do things seem to progress more quickly when there are a couple of Redboxes around?

We have about 10 RB locations here and no double kiosk locations as of yet. The closest thing to that would be two RB kiosks across the street from each other, one at a Kroger and one at McDonald’s.

We have 3 in 3 blocks (Kroger – Walgreens – Wal-Mart) and it doesn’t seem to help much. I would love to see the double here.

We now have 4 Redboxes within a mile or so of my house, and only 1 Bluebox anywhere near that same radius. No doubles, but 3 of the 4 you could practically see one another.

We have ONE RedBox location in San Francisco in the downtown area. It’s walkable but not convenient. Would love for one much closer.

I know of 1 double location near me and that is in a new Walmart that opened in the last 12 months. Even with 2 kiosks there is often a line at night for them.

There are 4 within 3 miles of my house and two are double kiosks. It took them about 4 months to get the double kiosks going after the initial install. And yes they are much faster when dropping off movies because you can usually get in the shorter line. However picking up you have to wait on one machine and if you want to pickup videos out of two machines that usually means waiting in two lines.

It would be awesome if they made the return and pickup dispensers separate. Like put the return on the right side with a big red “return” button.

There’s a double in a walgreen’s but I think only because one of them is always out of order!

This can be tricky! My Walgreens has a double and i checked online to see if a movie was there and it was. I didn’t reserve it and when I got there I thought it was gone. But when I checked the other side it was there. The sides don’t seem to talk ….or share a queue. It would be nice if it would at least tell me I can get it in the machine less than 2 feet away!

All of the double kiosks in my area have BDs; however, some locations have TWO vending machines, but only have DVDs.

We have TONS of double locations, and some Albertsons which have 3 kiosks!! The funny thing is, all of them are busy, I’m still waiting in lines, but not nearly as long!

It would be great if they design a separate return slot on the RedBox. it stinks to wait on line just to return a disc.

I agree 100%! I was actually very surprised when Redbox started installing new kiosks and multiple kiosks WITHOUT adding a return only slot – I thought that would be a no-brainer. It’s annoying to people returning AND to people trying to browse movies (although I have NO qualms about politely asking a browser if they would mind if I just returned my DVD real quick, usually they are cool with it). What about it, redbox?

If you you had to choose wouldn’t a second kiosk be better than a single kiosk with a return only slot? Just wondering.

Agree. This is our families one complaint. You get stuck waiting to return one behind someone that takes 10 minutes to pick what they want. There should be a way to return them at anytime without waiting in line. Maybe redesign the kiosk and have 2 dvd doors, one for dvds coming out and one going in.

Of the 12 redbox locations within 5 miles of my house, 5 of them are double kiosk locations. Most of the double kiosk locations are grocery stores but some are gas stations.

we have 4 double kiosks in the md area with 7 miles. we have 50+ kiosks within 12 miles. we have 25 kiosks that have blu-ray within 7 miles. but the bd titles are limited!
all this doesnt matter … ive seen everything i want to see in the boxes
and i have so many promo codes and so many credit cards that i cant use them!
im just looking for titles in blu-ray that are worth it. and those are few and far between.

besides most good new movies are available for free at bb express. red just fills in
    a few titles and blu-ray.

We have 17 locations in our city and notonly are all of them doubles, but some of the locations have two doubles!

I’ve only found two within 1 mi. but neither are doubles, that I can recall. There’s a lot of crime/gangs beginning, but I believe double- kiosks will help to keep that down some because the lines are often long now, folks impatient, -many teens/ young adults. I didn’t feel comfortable with them looking over my shoulder, my getting the impression they might be watching
my fingers for my code? But, when I began to have some minor difficulty, one of them offered to help and it worked. I believe these are a need in our community because it’s so very large. The market should be good because there’s plenty of money in this area, huge diversity, and many jobs employing immigrants who need a place to spend their money quickly after hours. ” – “

I have a double location, but without checking online first, you don’t know which one you should wait in line at, since both have different stock. As one user above wrote, it would be nice to have them aware of each other’s movie availability.

There is 1 kiosk at County Market here and 1 kiosk At Wal-Mart which is 4 miles away. I have repeatedly asked for more and I know others have too and we are ignored, ignored, ignored. I love Redbox but wish BlockBuster hadn’t gone out of business because at least you could get movies even if you had to pay more. Not everyone wants to deal with NetFlix.
