Columbia House Launches Blu-ray Club

Did you ever have a Columbia House CD membership in the 90s? If so, get ready for a wave of nostalgia as the company moves into the HD era. The venerable direct-to-consumer company launched the first Blu-ray disc club yesterday.

Club membership will get you up to two Blu-ray titles per month for $5.99 each (plus processing and shipping). Like its elder CD-shipping sibling, by joining you are committing yourself to automatic shipment each month, which you can return unopened within a grace period.

The service’s catalog is limited to a few dozen titles right now, but will likely grow if the venture proves successful.

Membership details can be found here.

According to Deborah Fine, president and CEO of Direct Brands, Columbia House’s parent:

“We are extremely dedicated to the future of DVD collections, so much so that we created a new Blu-ray-specific club, which will provide consumers dedicated to this format with all of the advantages of our club membership,”

Is this new by-mail club going to be successful, Insiders? Or does it seem like a throwback (and a mistake) to get into the physical media mailing business at this point in the game.

But how many disks do you have to buy at FULL PRICE ($30 or $40) plus shipping, handling, taxes, fees etc. to be able to buy those two at the reduced rate?

I’d much rather order what I want, when I want from amazon – with FREE shipping – and not be bothered to return a “card” for a movie I don’t want – or return the movie that they shipped me automatically.

I was in their CD club years ago. Yes, you did get a deal on a few cd’s, but you paid for it with the extremely high prices / shipping fees on other movies that you were forced to buy.

I, too, was once a CD club member, but it ended, shall we say, not well. Unless they have some screaming deals, I really can’t see how their business model can beat Amazon’s.

The CD club was ended a few years ago and switched to ‘yourmusic’ which promised CDs at a low price. However, that ended as well last week.

15+ years ago, CDs and then later the DVD clubs were good options to build a collection. To maximize, you needed to find the best promo code, sign up, then quit. Rinse and Repeat. But then, there were no other venues to purchase CDs other than local music stores.

Only other DVD/Blu-Ray club I know of today is Disney’s, but there’s a specific market for those…

Today, with all the current sales on released products, and then clearance a few months later, this club today is just doomed.

NOTE: Forgot about BMG. So BMG acquired Columbia House, then became yourmusic… Full wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_House

    This is an outdated concept.

Their list only has three movies I’d be interested in at the moment. That translates into unwanted movies until their list expanded and they would probably be too high in price when the list did expand. You have to buy three more movies at regular club prices during the next year. Regular club prices are $19.95 and up. I can buy cheaper at Costco or online.
