Along with the recent launch of a miniaturized and updated Apple TV device, Apple also announced that TV show rentals from ABC and Fox would be dropping to 99 cents, and that content from the rest of the studios would likely follow suit soon. Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, however, thinks the new price point is ludicrous.
Said Bewkes:
“How can you justify renting your first-run TV shows individually for 99 cents an episode . . . [Doing so could] jeopardize the sale of the same shows as a series to branded networks that pay hundreds of millions of dollars and make those shows available to loyal viewers for free.”
NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker recently voiced a similar opinion:
“We do not think 99 cents is the right price point for our content . . . We thought it would devalue our content.

Studio chiefs complaining about $1 rentals devaluing their content—where have we heard this before? Do Zucker and his counterpart at Warner have a valid argument, Insiders? Will studios besides Fox and ABC “see the light and get on board” with cheaper TV show rentals, as Steve Jobs predicted during his Apple TV announcement?

This is coming from the companies that own Warner Bros. and Universal, who, as we all know, caused the 28 day delay (along with Fox). So of course they will complain. But how is it that $1.99 on iTunes is fine, but not $.99?
And never listen to Jeff Zucker. You saw what he and Jay Leno did to Conan O’Brien.
I think they’ll go wherever the money is which more and more is going to be online. They’ll definitely offer them at 99 cents if it makes sense for them to.

Where do I send my satellite bill to get these free shows they are talking about? The last I checked, I was paying $100s and $100s of dollars a year for these “free” shows.
Non cord cutters, the cable lifers, perceive that it’s free so paying an incremental $.99 seems dumb to them. Cable is about to start a 10 year death march though so we’ll all have our revenge on comcast et al.

Syndication will still make them their money, .99 videos will still make them their money and selling the whole season series will still get them their money. I admit that all of this free and pirated material is losing money for the studios and is also slowing down retail so people have a job. I will gladly stop spending my dollar and just borrow or join the whole 80 % of people getting everything they want off the internet because I refuse to buy a movie or tv show that sucks.
Does anyone even buy these things at $0.99? $0.10 might be a good price point.
How is paying .99/episode any different than buying a DVD boxset? If I buy a TV show’s boxset for $30 and it has 23 episodes, I have spent $1.30/episode. That extra $7 gets me actual physical media that I can watch and then resell on eBay for about $20. Try reselling a video download.
The movie/TV networks are idiots.
As far as the “free”, I believe they are talking abt NBC, ABC, CW, etc offering the shows free on their websites after they have aired. But still, who in their right mind would PAY to watch ANY tv show online? If I pay $1 for a 2-3 hour movie, a 30 minute sitcom should be no more than 0.25-.50! Even then I probably wouldn’t pay.

Not much to post about lately. I suppose I could have added my disdain to the thread where people were whining about not getting their free codes but lots of other people were doing that already.
If you really cared though, you would have seen that I made a post a couple days ago about Sony changing their policy towards AAA tiered product and the window they are imposing on some vendors. Expect Sony to join the big 3 as soon as their current deal with Redbox runs out.
