The last few years have seen an explosion in the quality and sophistication of the equipment available for home entertainment enjoyment. Not all that many years ago, most people huddled around a VCR connected to a low-res, twenty-something inch TV. Now, for a relatively reasonable price, film fanatics can enjoy a home entertainment system that rivals the movie theater experience. High definition, large screen TVs are more and more common at ever-decreasing price points. The advent of DVD, Blu-ray, and HD streaming have also vastly improved the visual and audio quality of the movies we watch at home. From a technical standpoint, it’s a great time to be a movie lover.
Options
Alongside the proliferation of improved home theater tech, there’s been an explosion in the number of ways we can choose to enjoy content. Where we were once stuck trolling the aisles of the local Blockbuster and hassling with memberships at video shops, it’s now possible to select and watch a movie entirely from the comfort of the couch. The greatest effort expended is pointing the remote at the TV! Set-top streaming boxes, smart TVs, video-on-demand and more have made it slick and simple to get movie night rolling in seconds. And for those times when we can actually bring ourselves to leave the house, there’s bound to be a Redbox just down the street packed with hundreds of options at an ultra low (or free!) price point.
Visionary Filmmakers
For years, we’ve been bemoaning the creative decline of franchise-obsessed and risk-averse Hollywood. It’s easy to get cynical during the typical summer blockbuster pileup, as one CGI-loaded sequel after the other assaults our senses.

Through it all, however, there remains a cadre of brilliantly imaginative voices still turning out fantastic movies, both original and otherwise. Filmmakers such as the Coen Brothers, Wes Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Sofia Coppola, Stephen Soderbergh, Jason Reitman, and more still believe in the value of a story well-told on celluloid.
