Amazon Launches Instant Video in Japan

downloadThe already crowded Japanese streaming market just got a major entrant with the introduction of Amazon’s Instant Video transactional VOD and sell-through service in the Land of the Rising Sun.

New releases cost $5 to rent and $25 to purchase. Older catalog titles are as cheap as just $1 for a 24-hour rental. Amazon’s rapidly expanding service currently offers more than 26,000 movies and TV show episodes in Japan.¬†Amazon allows users to stream content to two devices, but downloading is limited to just one.

With arch-rival Netflix not officially available in Japan, this may be a great move by Amazon to stake out some territory. How soon until we see Netflix making its own bid for control of the Japanese VOD market?
