Amazon Launches Instant Video in Japan

downloadThe already crowded Japanese streaming market just got a major entrant with the introduction of Amazon’s Instant Video transactional VOD and sell-through service in the Land of the Rising Sun.

New releases cost $5 to rent and $25 to purchase. Older catalog titles are as cheap as just $1 for a 24-hour rental. Amazon’s rapidly expanding service currently offers more than 26,000 movies and TV show episodes in Japan. Amazon allows users to stream content to two devices, but downloading is limited to just one.

With arch-rival Netflix not officially available in Japan, this may be a great move by Amazon to stake out some territory. How soon until we see Netflix making its own bid for control of the Japanese VOD market?
