We’ve been hearing for months that Blu-ray availability at Redbox is just around the corner, but now some firmer pricing figures are coming to light.

Speaking at the Entertainment Supply Chain Academy Edge (say it five times fast—fun!) conference today, Redbox president Mitch Lowe said that his company will likely charge $1.50 per night for high-definition disc rentals. Lowe also confirmed earlier statements that BDs will start hitting Redbox kiosks en masse “over the next few months.”

Dropping a few more numbers, Lowe also said that “16.9% of Redbox customers own a Blu-ray player” and that “Redbox’s 23% share of the rental market will help drive Blu-ray adoption.”

Does a buck-and-a-half sound like a reasonable price for a Blu-ray rental, Insiders? If this pricing scheme does pan out, what will it mean for the allegedly imminent price hike of standard-def DVD rentals at Redbox? Tell us what you think in the comments.

I think that it is a fair price and hopefully they can keep it at that for several years. I want to see alot of titles on Blu-ray though and not just a couple. I am only interested in this format now, so if they want my cash, this is how they will get it. With DVD I mostly only rented with codes and on Holidays, with Blu-ray I will spend cash because I want HD and want to avoid Blockbuster and Movie theatre prices.

bout darn time! $1.50 for BluRay rentals….heck ya! i drive by a few of these every day to work and back, we use them for DVD’s instead of waiting on Netflix to send them and use Netflix for BluRay….but now that this is coming around, I may cancel my Netflix account, the streaming is awful still, the decision to not release Fox and Universal movies until 30 days after street release was terrible, RedBox doesnt have that limitation, my 360 died recently (out of warranty) so i can stream to it anymore anyways…..

What truth? That you get a movie for a $1.08 a day? If your pissed at them, its most likely because your lazy and can’t return a movie on time. You rent it and it has to be back by 9:00 PM the next night. Its not a hard concept. Redbox kicks ass, stop talking shit you lazy ass!!!!

Blu-ray at $1.50 per day is just right for those who might keep it an extra day but how will Redbox pull this off if they were testing dvd’s at $1.50, $2.00 and $1.15? Price comparison, PS3 VOD High Def Rental is a staggering $5.99!!

I would rather see Blu-ray at $2.00 if it means DVD’s are kept at $1.00!!

Will rebox users know the difference between BD and DVD?

At retail, many erroneously purchase BD instead of DVD and visa-versa. Plus the additional SKU means fewer disks per kiosk or fewer titles. All the vending machines will need to be either updated or replaced to handle both formats without any problems.

No they won’t have to be changed much. They recently did just update the interface and now it has an option that says “All” or “DVD” on the bottom and I am sure their will be a “Blu-ray” option added once titles are put in the boxes. They will probably mention it in large print on the description page as well as a pop up warning like they do for the rated R movies educating people with something like “Warning: This Blu-ray disc will only play on a Blu-ray drive or player such as Playstation 3. Would you like to Proceed?” Then have a Yes or No button.

I’d rent Blu-rays for $1.50. Granted there are some movies I really want to see on Blu-Ray (Avatar and such), but others I’m fine with DVD. I’d even do $2 or $2.50 for Blu-Ray, but don’t tell Redbox ;)

NC Red, agreed. Still unbelievable to me that VOD movies are $5.99. If I could watch them for $2 or maybe even $3 that may draw me away from Redbox, simply for convenience.

I would rent Blu-rays for $1.50. If they end up hiking the price of regular DVDs to more than $1 and keep Blu-rays at $1.50, that would be even more reason for me to get Blu-rays.

Some people say they are paying $1.50 for dvds, so how will that work? Makes me think maybe price hikes for dvds are going to be disregarded and put back to $1 possibly? Redbox, hello?

This will put Redbox at an advantage to other rental places that aren’t doing this yet. Very smart! Redbox needs to stay a step ahead. People love technology and most consumers will purchase BlueRay players if BR disk are easily availible. Maybe redbox can add a discount code for consumers to purchase a new BR player or after so many regular DVD rentals you can get a free BR player or win one with a rental. Like a prize. Maybe certain locations can rent games, etc. Go Redbox. Bring it on!

I’ve rented a blue ray from or neighborhood Redbox machine in the past.

I rented one accidently thinking it was regular DVD (as I didn’t have my PS3 yet). This was back before Christmas 2010. I called Redbox and explained and they said to just return it and they sent me a code for a free rental.

Maybe our kiosk is a test one or something. I’ve rented a few Blue Ray movies since having my PS3…..

Price is right; remains to be seen as far as content provided. It should spur Blu-ray player sales, or, at the least, increase recognition of Blu-ray’s existence.

They said “few months” few months ago! When is it coming?

What is everyone’s source in renting blurays? I used both netflex and blockbuster online, and they were both horrible. New releases would have a “short wait” or “long wait” status and I wouldn’t receive them until 1-2 months after release.

Just rented a blu-ray here in Utah… still only $1.00, anyone know how to find out which machines have blu-ray disks in them?

I haven’t rented a Blu-Ray yet from my local kiosk, so I don’t know the price point, but the Walgreens by my house (Montgomery, AL) has a dual kiosk set up, and they have a small selection of Blu-ray titles. I’ll have to check it out. It might have been a local decision, because the Redbox website doesn’t acknowledge the existence of the Blu-ray discs there.
