Redbox is in an interesting place right now. It’s looking for ways to return to revenue growth even as it has just about saturated the DVD kiosk rental business in the U.S. and pulled the plug on its streaming partnership with Verizon, Redbox Instant.

Even with rumors going around that Redbox is looking to try the digital side of things again, the company has announced a bold, completely new direction that it hopes will reinvigorate its business: Redbox Air drone DVD delivery. See today’s news release after the jump for full details.
Here’s the complete news release from Redbox.com:
Oakbrook Terrace, Ill. – Outerwall Inc., a leader in automated retail and parent company of Redbox, today announces Redbox Air, a DVD delivery system using small unmanned aerial vehicles, also called drones.
Redbox Air will safely deliver DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and video games to Redbox customers within 30 minutes of ordering. This innovative new system will launch in the summer of 2017, with test flights taking place in select markets during the spring of 2017.
“After extensive market research, customer feedback analysis, and negotiations with the FAA and all other applicable regulatory agencies, we strongly believe that the future of Redbox is up in the air,” says Outerwall CEO Erik Prusch. “Our customers love our vast selection of high-quality movies and video games, but want an even more convenient way to access them than driving to a Redbox kiosk.

Redbox Air is the perfect solution, bringing our customers’ home entertainment selections directly to their front door in just 30 minutes. There’s simply nothing out there like it.”Redbox Air will be a subscription service, with customers selecting from four different “Air Drop” frequencies ranging from twice per week to once per month, all for a reasonable fee that will be lower than most online streaming subscriptions. Redbox Air rentals can be returned by placing them in the drone’s secure carry basket during its next scheduled delivery, or by conveniently returning them to any Redbox kiosk.
Redbox Air drones will fly at a maximum altitude of 400 feet and weigh just 50 pounds. Highly automated and equipped with the latest “sense and avoid” technology, Redbox Air drones will be a safe and efficient way for millions of Redbox customers across the country to enjoy their favorite movies.
“No home entertainment company has ever attempted this kind of innovation before” says Prusch. “Redbox Air is truly a first-of-its-kind movie delivery experience, and we’re confident that our customers will be blown away at how convenient, cost-effective, and fun this service will be.”
Complete details on Redbox Air, including pricing, will be released later in 2016.
This is definitely a forward-thinking and innovative move from Redbox, and may be just the thing the company needs to inject some excitement into its movie-rental business. Will you be interested in participating in Redbox Air when it “launches” next year? Let us know your opinion in the comments!

Cute April Fool’s joke. Redbox also sent out an inquiry looking for “Redbox Ambassadors” to sit inside the kiosk and give out the movies by hand. They definitely have a sense of humor.
Yeah their joke was a copy (but not as funny :) ) of our April Fools post from 2010: http://www.insideredbox.com/redbox-to-speed-up-dvd-return-process-save-jobs/
