RedBox-LogoAfter the dismal failure that was Redbox Instant, one could be forgiven for thinking that Redbox was too badly burned by its foray into the streaming world to ever try again. That may not be the case, according to Variety.

Variety is claiming that Redbox is getting ready to launch a new video streaming service called Redbox Digital, and may be offering a closed Beta test soon.

Unlike its failed predecessor, Redbox Digital will not be a subscription bundle that will directly challenge Netflix, according to Variety. Instead, Redbox Digital would be a video-on-demand store similar to iTunes or Google Play that will allow customers to rent or purchase digital copies of movies and shows.

When Variety reached out to Redbox, they were given the following vague response:

“Redbox continually looks for ways to enhance our customer experience. For tens of millions of consumers, Redbox is their source for new release rentals without a subscription.

As such, we regularly conduct tests of potential new offerings, that may or may not be brought to market, as part of our ongoing commitment to provide additional value.”

Do you think Redbox is ready to try again in the digital realm? If so, will its new service be able to distinguish itself from iTunes and other competition?

Pricing. I don’t do any digital renting now due to cost. Also bundles. A free disc rental with x number of digital rentals of purchase. Also it should be part of the current rewards program. They have to keep doing extra value otherwise it’s mostly pointless.

Not going to do much good.. This will just be one more step in the down fall of the Box. No extra value. Netflix, Hulu, Warner archives, HBONow & ShowTime & CBS online. Really don’t need anymore online set ups..

Just give us more Redbox kiosks in our area and promo codes that work on all of them, as well as credits!

The kiosks are closing here & there. As RedBox’s try’s to right itself.
Streaming will take over in the next say three ,five years. I mean a complete take over. No more DVD’s. DVD’S will go the way of VHS Tapes & Laser Disc..
Just a bit more time. I still get Laser Disc when I see one I want online. And VHS Tapes also.. And I still have Netflix in the mail. Still like my DVD in my hand.
If the Box wants to be here down the road… it will need to be a streaming deal.
