to finance the upcoming theatrical sequel to the 2000 martial arts hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Netflix is reportedly planning on offering Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2: The Green Legend on its streaming service the same day the film premieres in IMAX next year. If it all pans out, this collaboration will be the first time that a major theatrical movie has launched on a streaming service the day it comes out.

Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, is a loud opponent of theater owners’ perceived refusal to change with the times. Said Sarandos:

“Theater owners stifle this kind of innovation at every turn. The reason why we may enter this space and try to release some big movies ourselves this way, is because I’m concerned that as theater owners try to strangle innovation and distribution, not only are they going to kill theaters – they might kill movies . . . What I am hoping is that [the ‘Green Legend’ release] will be a proof point that the sky doesn’t fall . . . These are two different experiences, like going to a football game and watching a football game on TV.”

What do you think about this envelope-pushing by Netflix? Will financing a major film and then streaming it the day it comes out pay off?
