Would you like to subscribe to theatrical movies the same way you subscribe to a DVD rental or streaming service? If so, you might want to keep an eye on new startup MoviePass.

The new service, which launches on a trial basis in San Francisco this week, offers moviegoers as many cinema screenings as they want for a month.

Limitations on the service include a one film per day allowance and a $3 upcharge for 3D or IMAX shows.

Tickets are purchased on a partner website, which provides a code that’s exchanged at the box office for an actual ticket.

It will be interesting to see how, and if, this new idea takes off. With box office results in a decline, will services like MoviePass be the solution that theater owners and studios are looking for? Visit the comments and leave your thoughts on this new movie-watching option.

6/30/11 Update
The MoviePass trial in San Francisco has been suspended after complaints from several theater chains. We will let you know if/when the test resumes.

I tried to talk AMC into something like this 10 yrs ago I think it would be great. It is 60 miles for me to go to a theatre so I would love to go and see a few movies. I would just buy a couple of passes

The pricing is too high. Even if movies are as high as $10 you have to go more than once a week for it to pay off.

I’d much prefer closer to $20/month and a restriction that you can’t get your ticket more than 30 minutes in advance on weekend nights or something.

I don’t go to the theater that often, though, and I never go on weekend nights. Is there a crowding problem? On weekday afternoons I’m frequently one of less than a dozen.

I would not pay 50 bills and the upocharge for 3D is stupid. I can understand upcharge for IMAX but 3D makes no sense with most movies being in 3D and the options for standard becoming limited. Most movies bring noting extra in 3D.

If it was cheaper and only upcharged for IMAX then I would do it.

I go to the theater often (usually once every week). Even when I go after 6pm and pay $9.00/show, it would not be a deal. As mentioned before, I would have to go more than once a week to come out ahead. Often, I get in for $7.00 (matinee shows), so that makes $50.00 seem even more outrageous. Now if it were more like $20, I’d jump on it.

It’s a step in the right direction, now if they will only confiscate cell phones at the door.

I know of some people filming the movie with their camcords. and then sell them on the black market. I’ve seen them as cheap as the ones you can buy at Dollar General!

If they adjust the price, I think it’s a great idea.

I would rather see a movie in the comfort of my own residence, so I rarely ever go to the theater.

Im on the road most of the year and would probably go to the movies three or four times a week so it would be a deal for me. I spend 50 or more for movies a month now cheaper would be great but still a good deal for me.

No wonder movies rake in MILLIONS of money. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if movie actors worked for minimum wage?! $50 bucks is pretty steep. Red Box would still be cheaper. What do you offer in place of Netflex?
