Redbox Instant LogoWith its official launch (supposedly) drawing near, Redbox Instant by Verizon is no doubt looking for every opportunity to stand out in the crowded streaming marketplace. Once way it may be doing so is by financing and creating original content.

The possibility was voiced/leaked by Peter Micelli, an agent with Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles, during a UCLA Entertainment Symposium.

If this theory is true, Redbox Instant may be looking with envious eyes at competitors such as Netflix, whose recent House of Cards has garnered much acclaim and industry attention.

B. Riley analyst Eric Wold says that the idea makes sense, if it is true.

Said Wold:

“Given that both Netflix and Amazon are moving forward with original programming, that is the one thing that can truly differentiate one SVOD offering from another . . . I believe that if Redbox were to announce that it would be utilizing a small portion of [parent Coinstar’s recent funding] to at least test out a season of one or more original programming series (especially in the early stages of Redbox Instant’s launch), it would be received well by investors given that a major bearish comment on Redbox Instant has been that the content is available on other platforms and not unique to Redbox Instant,”

Is original content, while expensive an onerous to produce, the key to luring and keeping subscribers in the streaming video marketplace. Is Redbox Instant going to dip its toe into those waters?

Didn’t NetFlix try this strategy–creating original programming? What was the result? Why should redbox/Verizon do any better?

All three are infants swimming in a sea of sharks!

Stick to the knitting and focus on reliable distribution with added-value features like: multi-channel audio and language and sub-title support.

House of Cards is very well received critically and might garner some Emmy nominations. From what is coming out of the 14 Arrested Development episodes that come out soon those are excellent as well.
