..Hi..
…Best father & son movie is: “The Road”…
..Cheers..
…Be Seeing You…Raja…
The BEST Father and Son movie is from 1986. It stars a young and uprising star, Tom Hanks and a Veteran movie actor in I believe his last role… the great Jackie Gleason. The movie is called Nothing In Common. Filmed in Chicago, well-written, acted and very heart-felt and funny. A great supporting cast too including Eva Marie Saint as Tom Hanks mother, the very cute Bess Armstrong, Hector Elizondo, Barry Corbin and the ageless, beautiful Sela Ward. A terrific movie with a good dose of comedy mixed in with the drama of a son that never knew his father growing up, now forced to take care of him and yes, get to know him, as his father now needs his son. Music is composed by the great David Foster with a terrific song sung by a then relatively unknown Richard Marx.
Tom Hanks plays David Basner, a successful Art Director of a large Advertising agency who has plans to make partner of the agency. Davids plans are interrupted with his mother who suddenly leaves his father after years of a loveless marriage. David’s former high school girlfriend played well by the perky and cute Bess Armstrong is always there for support but has difficulty being the on-again, off-again girlfriend when David needs her to be. They both love each other but David’s playboy lifestyle and busy career has always been a divider and problem for them. After David’s mother leaves, both parents become a problem as their needs interrupt David’s life both personally and professionally. David soon learns that his father that he never really knew, treated his mother more like a roommate. His father slept with other women and lived in a loveless marriage. During all this David’s Ad Agency lands a huge Airline account with a Father and Daughter team of Barry Corbin and the beautifully, gorgeous, independent and business savoy Sela Ward, whom David begins a strong affair with. With all this going on, David must take care of his father who has let diabetes ravish him over the years and now needs David more than he wants to. David reluctantly helps his father while trying to manage the Airline account, keep his relationship with Sela Ward going, help his mother to get herself situated as she begins a new life as being single again and living on her own, getting her first job and begin meeting new male companions. During this entire time, David is getting to know his father, not by choice and not without its complications. But David begins to grow closer to his Father as his health fails, as he puts everything in his life on the line to take care of his father and get to know him. It’s a movie that truly portrays a dysfunctional father and son relationship, that changes out of necessity and grows out of love. A good Father and son movie that really should be seen if you never saw it. One of Jackie Gleason’s finest performances and a early dramatic role that previewed the talents and acting chops of the Tom Hanks to come. Thumbs up! 5 Stars!
