Them’s fightin’ words. Dish Network’s new CEO, Joe Clayton, just fired a warning shot across Netflix’s bow. Clayton, in comments made during an interview with the Los Angeles Times, brashly commented that Netflix shouldn’t get too comfortable in its position atop the streaming world.

Said Clayton:

“Everybody’s enamoured with Netflix. Who’s to say we can’t do the same thing? If I were them, I’d be watching what’s going on,”

Frost & Sullivan analyst Dan Rayburn thinks that Dish-owned Blockbuster could have a shot at stealing a piece of Netflix’s streaming pie, but only time will tell for sure. Said Rayburn:

“What exactly they will do with it and what their service will look like, that’s the question . . . I think they could compete, but too early to say until we know what they offer.”

As we’ve learned in the last few months, Blockbuster has a pretty strong will to survive and recapture at least some of its former glory. Would a BB-operated streaming venture be met with accolades or derision?

    Ha! Ha! Ha!

Won’t Dish/BB’s streaming cannibalize its satellite business?

Why have dish service, when the IP stack affords more options?

They don’t have the money available to invest in streaming.

Please bring some competition to the mix. Only means lower prices and higher quality for consumers

I don’t know about that. Probably would mean each service would want to get an ‘excusive’ deal for content, so therfore have to pay more for it, and then we would pay more.

The days of the companies selling their content to Netflix and Hulu and Amazon and maybe BB and maybe Redbox won’t last.

It’ll last as long as creation and distribution are different skill sets. The Internet is quite old now and studios still need 3rd party distributors.

As Vernon hinted at, the catch in this is Dish pursuing anything internet related will push their consumers to cable. Dish has a deal with many phone companies to offer DSL since sat. internet will most likely never take off on a consumer level. However DSL is still limited compared to most cable internet in both price, speed, and availability.

I think this is just another bad decision. Going after someone with much better standing is just throwing more money away. If they want to survive they need to find a different way to do it. When everyone goes after the same pie they fail to realize when there is none left.

      Agreed!

The big problem with satellite service is that no one have figured out how to make it a *full-duplex proposition*. Up-load bandwidth was sacrificed and therefore can’t be true competitor from terrestrial-based options.

I honestly do not like Dish Network. From what I have encountered with them they do not care about their customers. I currently have Dish Network and any time I have a problem their response is basically that I am stuck in their service unless I want to pay a large amount to get out of their service. I have been a dissatisfied Dish customer from almost the beginning. I can’t see anyone being very happy with them if they start a streaming service. I use Redbox on occasion and I am also a very happy Netflix customer. I use the DVD delivery and the streaming service with NO problems what so ever.
