(R)editorial: Oscars Recap

ZZZZZZZZZ. Did you hear that sound last night, Insiders? That was the sound of millions of movie lovers nodding off during what had to be one of the most soul-crushingly boring Academy Awards ceremonies in recent memory. Hosts Anne Hathaway and James Franco seemed hyperactive and bored, respectively, and the overall event was very, very dull.

Fortunately, there were some great movies recognized and some very deserving winners. The King’s Speech took home the top award of the night, beating out rival The Social Network. I was seven-for-nine for the night with my Oscars predictions—how did you do?

It’s that time of year again: Oscars season! The 83rd Academy Awards will take place Sunday night, and the biggest stars in the industry will show up in their finest as Hollywood spends three hours reveling in its own awesomeness.

This year, the tightest race by far is the one for Best Picture. The Social Network was the early favorite, but The King’s Speech has been getting a lot of attention over the last few months. Frankly, both are excellent films and are each worthy of the evening’s top prize.

A prominent analyst has spoken out against the earnings estimate for 2011 from Redbox parent Coinstar, sending the latter’s shares tumbling. JP Morgan analyst Paul Coster dropped his rating on Coinstar shares from “neutral” to “underperform”.

One of the big industry news stories this week was the introduction of Amazon’s Prime Instant Video service, which offers more than 5,000 streaming titles at no extra charge to paying Amazon Prime customers. According to a survey by research firm The Diffusion Group, Netflix may stand to lose some subscribers to Amazon over the latter’s new service.

Chalk up another victory for Redbox in the home entertainment rental business. According to a report by market research firm NPD Group, Redbox led the industry in physical media rentals in January, 2011, accounting for 35% of the market.

Amazon Launches Prime Streaming

The rumors were true, it turns out, as Amazon has pulled the wraps off of a new streaming service. Paying subscribers to Amazon Prime, the company’s $79 per year upgraded shipping program, will receive free, unlimited access to about 5,000 pieces of content.
