According to remarks from new CEO Doug McMillon, the company is planning to improve its game in that space.

Speaking at Re/code’s technology confab today, McMillon said Walmart plans to beef up its presence in online entertainment. Citing Amazon as “teaching the world what’s possible,” McMillon said that Walmart is going to invest further into online revenue-generating areas, which currently make up just a fraction of its overall revenue.

McMillon says that Walmart won’t follow Amazon and Netflix down the road of producing original content, but will instead focus its efforts on improving digital sellthrough and online purchases that are picked up in stores.

Said McMillon:

“We sell a lot of movies and music [in stores] . . . But we have room to improve relative to our digital offering. We aspire to sell more.”

What do you think Walmart can do to establish itself as a big player in the digital media game?

More advertising. I already converted over my collection cheap and now buy new releases sooner and cheaper than Blu-ray on VUDU. I think it’s great. They just need to keep showing the benefits.

I need amazon and hulu. I use my friends netflix when they release a new series b/c their other content pales in comparison to amazon.

Does Walmart Have An VuDu Licensed App,… for Android or iOS Devices?… last time, I checked online… they were still dependent on hardware driven platforms, ie; Smart TVs, Game Platforms, and Roku and other similar streaming interface devices to view, their digital content.

I couldn’t be less interested in buying media or going to a store. I’m also not interested in paying $4-6 for a video on demand I have to watch in 24 hours.

I’m fine with <$10 a month 'all you can eat' subs to hulu, netflix, aiv. Also fine with going to the redbox once or twice a month for a $1.xx dvd of a new release I really want to watch now.

But lots of people spend more freely than I do. My girlfriend thinks nothing of throwing $5 at starbucks or $5 for a cable company VOD. Then wonders at the end of the month where all her money went.
