While lots of consumers picked up DVDs or Blu-rays during the Black Friday shopping madness last week, a significantly smaller chunk picked up TVs, which have long been a staple of Black Friday shopping.
According to early information from the Consumer Technology Association, about 23 percent of consumers purchased a television, which is a steep drop from just a year ago when 37 percent of shoppers reported picking up a set.

With 4K Ultra High Definition sets widely available this year, industry insiders are baffled at the sales decline. Shawn DuBravac, chief economist with CTA, said the following:
“Fewer consumers purchased a television this year . . . Last year we had some inventory [issues] for UHD, we didn’t see that this year, at least not yet.”

My TV’s are holding up good enough. Plus I own several 3D movies and I don’t really want to buy a non-3D tv as that’s mostly what is on the market. 4k is not enticing to me. At this point until my tv won’t work there’s no reason to replace it.
My original Plasma lasted exactly four years and when it went last summer I bought a new one…..no need to buy a tv just because its on sale…..

American vehicle unit sales will set an all-time record by the end of 2015. Capital goods sales tend to be cyclical. Maybe next year it will be large home appliances like washers and dryers or ranges and refrigerators.
Probably by the time ONLY 4k TVs are for sale will the percentage increase during the holiday sales period. When was the last time someone even SAW a CRT TV for sale? ;)
They’re cheaper than ever, everyone has a flat screen. The market now is for those looking for a bigger tv, one for another room or a 4k.

Amazing how prices are dropping on TV’s while smart phone prices keep going up and up. Think about it, you see the typical top of the line smart phones selling for $600. to $700. range and you can now buy a 55″ 4G TV for same price, now where does that make any sense, simply does not compute knowing the electronics in both, smart phones should cost a tenth as much based on volume of electronics alone, components, screen resolution, just does not compute. Then look at PC industry, same thing, prices are dropping like a rock, so how can a fully loaded top of line laptop go for same price as smart phone? Just does not compute. PERIOD
No reason to buy until my great Panasonic plasma TVs quit working, and so far after five and three years both are not showing any signs of dying….knock on wood.
We’ve been forced to upgrade from SD to HD. That got rid of a bunch of old TV’s and made us switch to better designed TV’s that will last longer. Also we’re doing some much more video on tables, phones, and laptops/Chromebooks. So why buy new?
The main issue is people are not yet ready for ultra tv. 3d is a novelty. My 42″ Visio smart tv is 6 years old an going strong. My 26″ Sony Vega(13 years old) is still going strong and use it for the bedroom. Can’t see replacing either this year.
There isn’t enough content for 4K Ultra High Definition to warrant replacing an HD TV purchased in 2009 that still works perfectly. As it is, regular HD has more than enough detail. Rural areas are still struggling to get enough bandwidth to stream HD, let alone SD without buffering, so why would we need a 4K UHD TV?
No reason to buy a new TV until the one I have Craps out…
And that will be a time I think.

I just started using a HDTV last year from my colony’s nest move from a 19.5″ Sharp CRT TV from 1996. :P I don’t buy discs anymore since I rarely (re)watch them.
