download (20)We recently talked about how it looks like DVDs and BDs may be popular for a long time yet. Trans World Entertainment CEO Bob Higgins seems to agree with this sentiment, especially as it relates to the misfortunes of his company’s major competitor, Best Buy.

Higgins, whose firm owns f.y.e., is hopeful that physical disc sales will pick up at his company’s stores, especially since struggling Best Buy is reducing the amount of shelf space it will provide for packaged media.

Said Higgins:

“We feel we picked up a minor amount [disc sales] from Best Buy, but it is too hard to tell [definitively] . . . I think we’ll know better in the next six months.”

Do you think that consumers stymied by Best Buy’s lack of disc selection will flock to f.y.e. in the coming months?

If they had one near me. They don’t. I would check it out.
But I am finding Amazon’s still the best deal 95% of the time.
AS I wanted to get Star Trek The Next Generation Blu-ray. Season three.
Target had it! But NO WAY! $75.00 bucks. Best Buy about the same.
I can get it under $60.00 with tax on Amazon.. And have it with in 72 Hrs..

Why buy when titles can be rented, .mkv’d and streamed to any device?

To me, its two of the least important and least thought of companies when I think of buying a dvd. It would be like in the world of fast food burgers, where McDonalds and Burger King rule the market, having Jim’s Burgers and The Burger Shack competing to steal customers away from each other. In the end, FYE and Best Buy mean nothing to the world of disc sales. If both were to close today, the dvd market would not be hurt in the slightest.

I think most of the movie buyer are young people spending their parent’s money or gifts for birthdays and Christmas.
I don’t see the big deal of collecting movies. Just something to take up space.
I might watch a few movies more than once, but for the most part one time is enough for me. Streaming or rentals for consumers is where it’s at.
Buying movies on DVD or BR is for people who have money to waste.

Actually discs are sold to those of us who actually like physical product. Yes, I have ROKU and stream with the best of them but I still enjoy seeing and admiring artwork and credits for those items that I spend my money on. Steaming and downloading are excellent choices and the convenience can not be beat but there is room out there for both mediums…

Like you. I like to have them in my hand at times. And remember. Not everything is online. And keep in mind. The things that are, can be taken off at any time.
The TV shows I really like. I get the seasons when they come out. And the Movies I like also. And one more thing to keep in mind. Right now the online set up for the NetFlix, HULU, REDBOX ECT is good. BUT. The day is not far off. When there will be a cap on how much you can watch ect. And then you will pay up the A$$ for going over it. it is on the way! Sad to say…

Also, i might add that the quality of streaming video is very low compared to a Blu Ray. Where a Blu Ray will be encoded at 20 up to 38mbps, a typical streaming movie is around 2 or 3mbps! That’s a very degraded quality especially on a 50 inch screen or larger.
