Roku3withHeadphonesThe convenience and cost-effectiveness of streaming movies and TV shows continues to gain traction, particularly with younger consumers. According to a survey commissioned by the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE), seven out of 10 consumers who live in a broadband-equipped household have streamed a full-length TV show in the last six months.

NATPE president and CEO Rod Perth said the following about the survey results:

“Our study confirms that the paradigm for TV content discovery has changed dramatically with increased availability and use of TV content streaming options,”

Also among the NATPE study findings:

• Millennials are significantly more likely to consume full-length TV programs from a streaming source (84% streamed in the past six months) than live TV programming at its original air time (54%), or recorded content from a DVR (33%).

• In the study, 51% of millennials considered a subscription to Netflix “very valuable,” compared with 42% for broadcast channels, and 36% for cable subscriptions.

• Gen Xers tend to be the heaviest users of their cable/satellite/telco time-shifting offerings, including video on demand (VOD) and the DVR. Among those in this age group who have access to VOD, 76% use their VOD service once a week or more often.

I told the Cable TV people to take a hike a long time ago. I do have Time Warner for my High Speed net.. I have NetFlix online. Warner Archive online and the new Acorn online from the UK.. And way more then I can ever watch.
    NetFlix. $7.99 a month
    Warner Archives. $9.99 a month.
    Acorn. $.4.99 a month.
Total. $22.97 a month. + $71.00 a month for 300 MBPS. Net from Time Warner… And it all comes out to. $93.97 I am saving $70.00 a month with out the TV bit.. And that is with out any movie chan.
I will keep just what I have… Doing great with it…

As a reluctant member of the ‘Baby-Boomers’, I rarely watch OTA TV with the exception of some PBS programming. Everything else comes via the IP stack.

Other than the morning news and some sports, everything I watch is out of the DVR.

I have been using Redox for several years now. It started out a good alternative to HBO and other pay channels on cable, with the price being right. Now most selections are fantasy or werewolf and cartoon based, hardly anything for the adult who’s looking for a good realistic movie. The covers are made to look like their great productions, but in essence they are poorly acted or foreign movies. I don’t know who makes the selections, but obviously a child or someone immature.
I have returned selections many times without watching more than 15 minutes before returning. There should be someway that this can be improved. Redbox website looks like it was made by the same person who selects the movies.

You might do a little research on IMDB.com & rottentomatoes.com before making your selections. Time well spent. Biggest complaint I have with some of the foreign films is I need a little more time to read the text than some films allow. I do not like to keep my finger on the pause button the entire length of the movie.
