Redbox is best-known for its DVD and Blu-ray rentals, but the kiosk giant also rents video games from most of its tens of thousands of boxes across the country. According to Redbox, video game publishers are starting to recognize the value that these rentals are bringing to the industry.

According to Redbox director of video games Ryan Calnan, the company recently conducted a survey that found 50 percent of Redbox customers will only buy a video game if they can try it out first during a short rental period. Said Calnan of the finding:
“That was a big number to have come across . . . We’ve been talking to our customers for the last couple of years, and that’s the aggregate result that we got.

Calnan also cites a 20-50 percent conversion rate from rental to sale, and says that publishers are starting to recognize the value Redbox is bringing:

I rent every single game I am interested in from Redbox prior to purchasing it. $2 is a wise investment to see if the game sucks or not. Of the 30-40 games I have rented in the last couple years, I have purchased probably 80-85% of them after renting.
I’ve be burned a couple of time preordering games at $60 and were not what I expected even though im very picky about my games .this a very good option to try a game before you buy it but what what about those gamers that finish the game in one day or two 2 dollars for a $60 game great deal but its hurting the game developer who are struggling to make profit thanks to mostly gamestop and if its not a well known franchise and sell millions they may close the game studio
