I ran into one of the nice Redbox employees who stock the machines today at my local Walmart, and noticed she was loading the new movies with different cases. She let me trade the case I just got with my rental (Indiana Jones) for a new case so I could post it here.

New Redbox DVD case put into circulation Oct 2008
This version is thicker than the last iteration, but of a different design. It is now all one solid piece, which could cause it to break easier at the hinge, but who knows.

I assume Redbox makes these changes for a reason, likely durability and ease of use.

We rented Indiana Jones this weekend and it came in the new case. It felt sturdier and like it would last much longer, we liked it!
Yeah I got one back in September when I rented The Scorpion King 2 at my local Wal-Mart. Weird thing is that I have only gotten them at the Wal-Mart Redbox location but everybody else still has the old ones.
Yes, I have received those cases, too. They seemed to be more sturdy than the previous ones. We will see if they can hold up.

New cases? I remember first seeing the “new” case sometime in August when renting from my local RedBox. I only got the new case with only 1 or 2 rentals..been getting the old case ever since.
Yup, the NEW cases are OLD news.. I’ve been getting them on and off (rent about 4 movies a week) for the past 3-4 months. They are better and they are probably just swapping the bad old ones with flaws for the good new ones.
Perhaps these cases are only new around here, then. I was unaware that they had been around for so long. Oh, wel1! :)
If you ever do see anything new like this, please let me know and I will post about it sooner.

REDBOX IS THE BEST THING EVER!!! I LOVE THE CONVIENIENCE AND AVAILABILTY AND AVOIDING THE LONG TRIP TO BLOCKBUSTER.
right now i travel 5 miles to get to a redbox but i wish they would get one closer. but 5 miles will have to do. for now atleast.
I have already seen a few of the new cases with hinge breakage. I think it was a unthought through action to spend the money to change all of the cases over. the ones with the pin hinge seemed much better.
Actually my parents are in the business of manufacture plastic container, the newer cases isn’t using the better material than the previous one, look at the hings, it’s the breaking point right there, the type of plastic is part of the recycle left over ABS plastic, that actually cost less to make! And of course, for redbox, it cost less for them to buy those cases from its manufacture…
