Redbox Instant Details Leak Out Early

It’s rumor time, Insiders! Beta tests of the upcoming Redbox Instant streaming platform were accidentally leaked online and then quickly pulled. The info was live long enough to give us some interesting clues as to the service’s possible pricing, launch date and more.

Among the interesting tidbits:

  • The joint streaming and disc rental venture with Verizon could launch as early as December 17
  • Monthly service could cost as little as $6 for a streaming-only plan and $8 with four kiosk disc rentals
  • The service may initially be available on iOS and Android devices, along with the Xbox 360 and select Samsung devices

D.A. Davidson & Co. analyst John Kraft believes that between this new service and other recent developments, Coinstar/Redbox is poised for some great growth in the near-term. Said Kraft:

“This should create a win-win joint marketing relationship with the studios . . . We remain optimistic regarding several important catalysts: Warner’s just-signed contract with Redbox (effective January 1, 2013), which ends all of the company’s logistically complicating “work around”; the launch of Rubi, parent Coinstar’s coffee kiosk initiative; as well as the rollout of the acquired Blockbuster Express locations.”

Are you excited about the (allegedly) imminent launch of Redbox Instant? If these details turn out to be legit, do you think it’s a pretty good deal?

I think it sounds great. A lot of it comes down to the content and if the 4 rentals can be reserved online, then I will. I have been waiting for more ways to reserve movies at home. This whole wait in line and hope it isn’t taken stuff is old, so if they include that they will probably get me as a subscriber. I hope they are listening

I hope streaming would be through a TiVo premier, Wii, or my blue-ray player.

The price looks good. If it’s ever available for my Sony bluray player, I’ll take a closer look at the content. I’m not interested in watching on my phone, or in buying new boxes for my TV.

I am definitely waiting on it and I hope ie can be streamed through my Roku. I’m not interested in using my phone either. It has taken a long time. I’m somewhat disappointed that it won’t be ready for home television by Christmas, but I suppose we’ll have to wait.

I have NetFlix. And will keep it. I will look into this, but I don’t think it will be all they say it will be.
All kinds of things must happen.
    A. What will it play on?
    B. Does it have CC Closed Caption? Are SDH?
I can go on and on..
I will see. But for now. NetFlix is my set up. And I can watch the NetFlix Movies on my 55″ LCD TV. And they have Closed Caption on them.
    For $8.00 a month. Can’t beat it.

I just check online where the movies are located in which Redbox kiosks and enjoy going to get them. Sometimes I walk so I get exercise, too!
I doubt if I will use this at all.

I wonder if watching it through the Xbox will require a Gold Live account. if so, that adds another $5/month to the plan.

Will it include tv shows, or just movies?

Those 2 would be deal breakers for me.

You can get xbox live gold for $35 to $45 for 12months. Just keep an eye on amazon, Newegg and buy.com. Also Ebay and other places have it on special farily often. No reason to pay $60/yr for it.

I would be completly sold if somebody would give me a reason to cancel my cable! I like HBO Go but you gotta have cable just in order to get that! If they would allow people to subscribe without having cable then I would so cut the cord on cable! So somebody (Redbox?) needs to strike a deal with HBO!

I cut the cord years back. Nothing on but crap. And more new are remake crap on.. I cut the cord. And the cord bill. $100.00 + a month. I now have NetFlix online. and Block Buster two at a time out. All for under $25.00 a month. Still putting $80.00 a month in my pocket. And I can hit RedBox if I like. Doing great with out the cord.
