Netflix would love you to forgo movie tickets and a night out at the theater and stay in to stream content. One of the big selling points of a cutting-edge theater, massive surround sound, is now being added to select movies streaming on Netflix.

The streaming giant is introducing Dolby Atmos surround sound technology on content. The first movie to feature the sound experience is the new fantasy film Okja. Other Atmos-equipped movies, including Will Smith’s Bright, will be coming shortly.

Experiencing theater-quality sound is limited, for now, to Netflix subscribers that own Xbox One consoles that are connected to Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers, televisions, or headphones.

Netflix’s Chief Product Officer Greg Peters said the following about the new feature:

“In creating an immersive atmosphere, sound is just as important, if not more important, than the picture itself . . . It is a critical tool to extend the storytelling beyond the screen and draw audiences into the narrative.

“Imagine being surrounded by the sounds of the scene you’re watching — an airplane passing overhead, or the subtlety of the wind rustling tree leaves all around you . . . Having the extra dimension of immersive audio is a game changer for experiencing the realism of a story.”

Are you excited about this new feature coming to Netflix, Insiders?

Well, that limits your audience. I wonder how much bandwidth this sound uses.

Well, I need to upgrade my receiver and speakers, and buy an Xbox One…probably won’t happen though eventually I’ll at least upgrade my receiver and add speakers. The Xbox One won’t happen.
