Microsoft has pitched its new Xbox One console as an all-in-one living room box first and a gaming console second, and this move toward original content would seem to back up that intent.

The company has six original shows planned over the coming months, including a World Cup soccer-themed show called Every Street United, which will also feature interactive content.

XES will also debut a sci-fi series called Humans, which is centered around an alternate near-future in which servant robots are an integral part of every household. XES is also working on documentaries, comedies, music shows, and a Halo-themed series.

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, said the following about his company’s foray into original television content:

“TV, as the highest-reach form of entertainment you can find, is a critical part” of wooing consumers to Microsoft,”

How do you think Microsoft will fare in this new venture. Will its original content be compelling enough to pay off and attract more consumers to its Xbox ecosystem?

Of course, remember this is Microsoft we’re talking about. Every time a show gets really good, the box will lock up and have to be re-booted. Then, just when you learn how to use the box, they’ll come out with a new interface and you’ll have to learn how to use it all over again!
