Is Streaming Video Peaking Already?

imagesStreaming video hasn’t been a thing for all that long, but it looks like its popularity may already be cresting. According to a new report from research firm Strategy Analytics, U.S. consumer spending on subscriptions video-on-demand service will decline by 2 percent in 2016.

The firm also predicts that domestic spending on SVOD could drop more than 50 percent in the next five years. Michael Goodman, digital media director at Strategy Analytics, said the following about his firm’s research:

“It shows that, whilst actual market saturation is a few years off yet, the domestic streaming subscription market is now on the backside of the adoption curve. The incremental increase in annual spend will decline from here on,”

What do you think, Insiders? Have we already reached peak streaming?

Streaming is here to stay, but when this analysis, I would say this, it is only researching paid streaming services while the free streaming is exploding. Who wants to pay for content you can access for free, so this was not being factored in their analysis.

The big thing with streaming is.. it’s going to eat up your GB’s and fast on your caps on your net use. And people will be getting a real kick in the kisser bill.

    Re: DanoFIve0,
I hope our visitors realize your opinions are genuine and reflect the costly data caps being planned by the ISPs.

I find when I do a few hours a day of HD streaming I find it very easy to get to the cap I have for data. I now have a Roku on each TV. I have found a lot of free apps that I enjoy. I still subscribe to a few apps and expect that to continue. I do think many people will stick to free as there is new free apps and options s all the time.

More and more data on the Internet is in the form of videos, which eats up your data. Along with that are the constant app updates. Along with these, people are moving from cable subscribers to cellular connections. In my case, Verizon and the other cellular provider are reaping the profits and limiting our data allowances. We cannot keep streaming and still have enough data left for other uses without increased data allowances at reasonable prices.
