175_90_RedboxR.E.S.P.E.C.T. It’s not just Aretha who’s looking for it, but also kiosk rental giant Redbox. While discussing the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Redbox president Anne Saunders revealed that the head of one of Redbox’s erstwhile enemy movie studios begrudgingly admitted that respect was on the rise for the kiosk operator.

Said Saunders:

“I’ll let the person go unnamed, but one of the folks there said, ‘You know, three years ago I wouldn’t even tell anyone I was taking this meeting with you . . . But now you guys are a respected part of the industry.’”

Saunders chalked up this rise in industry respect to Redbox’s increasing important to the bottom lines of studios:

“We’ve moved into a position where with many of these studios we’re their No. 4 or No. 3 largest customer in home video . . . We have signed deals with studios where previously they didn’t believe it was in their best interest for them to do business with us. By and large, our relationships with the studios are positive and productive.

She went on to say that it’s taken Hollywood a while to come around to a fact that Redbox has known for years: people often purchase movies after “trying them out” at Redbox. Said Saunders:

“From our perspective, we’ve always felt that rental improved sellthrough, though the studios had a different point of view . . . What we see now though, quantitatively … by and large, people want to try it before they buy it.”

What do you think, Insiders? Has Redbox really earned the respect of Hollywood honchos, and can it last?

    Nope!

    Has Apple/iTunes?

Begrudgingly, both the music and movie business now realize that it’s nickles and dimes, not dollars, that are coming in as revenues. And pennies are better than NO dollars.

I’m sure they didn’t like Seth MacFarlane making a joke about Ted being in Redbox that smells like urine and has bums around it. Sure they like being mentioned but I don’t think vending machines makes them trashy. I think it’s just the profits are low so they make fun of a successful business.
