    REDBOX CODES NOT TRUELY WORKING!!!!!
The last 5 times I used a redbox code it accepted the code at the kiosk and it even sent me an E-MAIL saying it was $0.00 dollars but when I look at my bank statement it CHARGED me $1.00 I called REDBOX about it they just gave me another code (Which did the exact same thing when I used it: “Promo code approved but still charged”).
Has anybody else had this issue? Please respond, and check your balances to see if redbox really is charging you for that “FREE DVD”
    Thanks Brett

  9. Stacy Says:

    Brett,

Are you sure that you are returning your videos by 7:00 pm the next day? If not, then you will be charged for the next day. The codes only work for one day rental.

I rent a lot and have never noticed this. I will watch for it though.

  10. Jessy Says:

    Brett,
You’re not getting charged - they are putting a hold on your account for the $1.00 - they do this with my account every time. I can tell they’re not charging me because when I get charged, the amount is actually $1.06 because sales tax is added on. Usually, the amount is gone within a week. It freaked me out the first time, and I actually called my bank about it. It’s annoying, but it isn’t permanent.

  11. Brett Says:

Thanks for the comment Jessy I will watch to see if the charges get taken off my account.

  12. Bill Says:

    Hi Brett, Jessy:

(warning: probably more than you really wanted to know about credit cards, but I work with them for a living so I’ve had to learn some of this stuff and thought I’d share since that’s what this site is all about!)

Its actually not a charge, but an authorization (i.e. a check to ensure your card has a positive available balance). Its the first part of most “card present” credit card transactions (you just generally don’t notice because the second part: settlement usually happens right after you finish checking out). Think of it as a reservation to charge.

Authorizing the transaction is the only way that Redbox can check to ensure your credit card is valid. If an Authorization isn’t Settled its removed after a number of days (determined by your bank). Since Redbox is giving you a free coupon, they authorize, but don’t settle. (if you rent more than one movie, I imagine you’d see a settlement for 1.00 less than the number of movies you rent).

The same thing happens at many pre-paid gas pumps too — they often authorize for an amount around an average full-tank. If you get less, then the authorization can linger for a few days (this is why many people prefer to use debit cards at gas pumps).

    Hope this helps.

Can you use the same code more then once? Will you get caught?

  14. stephen2 Says:

I can’t use this site. My market is not inlcuded.

  15. Michael Says:

You can just choose the market that is closest to you. It seems that Redbox does not actually use markets anymore, or if they do, there are too many areas to name.

I will likely be changing it to “State” soon, and you may want to check even nearby states for workings codes, too.

  16. evr Says:

i tried 4 codes tonight at my local redbox (in maine).

each time, an error message said that the code could not be currently used at the location (i cannot remember the specific message). bummer.

  17. Michael Says:

I had that happen yesterday, too. All seems to be fine at my Redbox today, though, as I used a code to rent a movie a few minutes ago.

  18. evr Says:

i posted on March 8 that all four codes i tried did not work.

like Michael above, I tried again the following day and the code DID work.

the redbox has an antenna on it, so i assume it connects wirelessly to somewhere (probably the internets, which is a series of tubes and wires) to verify codes and transactions, so the network must have been down when i initially tried the code(s).

  19. debra Says:

hi i tried to use the codes and they didnt work do they have to be issued to me frist before i can use them or are different codes for different areas yu live in
i love renting movies wish there where more i use the box at wegmans on amhearst and have been renting 5 movies or more a week ty again for making this happen

  20. Miko Says:

I would love to see redbox in Orlando (tourist capital)$$$$$$$$$

  21. Dave Says:

I have used two free rental codes in the last two days. While I told me that the charge was 0.00, I had not just the one dollar hold, but a charge as well for 1.07 the next day, as well as a bill from redbox for the rental charge of 1.07, tax included. I even used the free code that they sent me!

It isn’t a hold, because the holds are still there, in addition to the charges that were hit. The bills they sent me just sealed the deal. I won’t be using redbox anymore. I just cannot trust them.

    Ciao
