Et tu, Disney? The Mouse House, so long opposed to new release delay windows, is apparently toying with the idea of imposing a 28-day waiting period on Redbox.

The revelation came during today’s earnings call with analysts, when Disney CEO Bob Iger said that his company was in discussions with Redbox about putting a delay window in place, and such a move “would be a wise thing for us to do.”

Iger also revealed on the call that Disney, the only major studio not involved in the UltraViolet consortium, remains cautious about the much-discussed cloud delivery system. Said Iger:

“I don’t want to sound too critical, but we’re taking a wait-and-see approach on UltraViolet . . . I’m not suggesting that we’re not open-minded about it, but so far I’m not sure that it’s proven to be as robust as we’d expected or as consumer-friendly as we had hoped.

Again, that’s not to say that we wouldn’t necessarily consider it, but it’s way too early to conclude that.”

What do you think caused Iger’s change of heart? Would such a move by Disney be detrimental to Redbox?

I think he’s feeling the pressure because other studios are installing or lengthening their windows. Disney is the one that could pose the biggest problem to Redbox sue to their predominance of children’s movies.

28, 56, or 72 days…whatever. Not going to make a difference to me either way.

Studios won’t force me to buy their movies if I don’t want to!!! I will wait, Disney will not make a penny off of me! Why don’t these studios get it? If I want to buy it, I will, regardless. If its a crap movie that I don’t care about, but maybe I just want to see it once, gee, will I pay $20 or wait until it rents for a couple bucks… Hmmm….

All the studios are freaking out because they aren’t selling “as much as they should” as told to them by their analysts. I don’t know what it is going to take for them to STOP listening to the people who DON’T buy the merchandise.

They don’t know how many of us were burnt by “exclusive, specialized, limited edition, 1st time and re- releases” that made us swear to NOT buy until we rented first.
Stewie said it best… Banning “Jafar goes to the eye doctor.”

I’ve said it for years, with all of the different releases, formats, and recycling going on, if you want people to buy… offer a trade in/ upgrade program. You could upgrade to their latest release and get some bucks off by trading in your old disc/tape.
But, what do I know, I’m only a consumer..

Why? Expectation of more profits. He and the others may be surprised.

I rent 99% of my movies. All the delay does is force me to borrow one from a friend that they were going to buy anyways. I easily avoid the delay window. I’m NOT going to be forced to buy ANYTHING. Delay all you want stupid studios. If enough people would do this, then it will wind up costing more sales in the end because there won’t be as many rentals which will lead to decreased sales to redbox and the like.

I havent bought a dvd since clinton was in office i think, anyhow if redbox doesnt have it , i rent it from my local library for $1.50. And if they dont have it then i wait, but i dont buy them any more: i dont think they are worth that much money; just like athelets, singers, actors they are all over paid if you ask me, none of them are worth that much, maybe $500,000 per year and thats it.

I don’t really care. I don’t buy much DVDs now. 95% of the new Movies are trash anyway. I have Block Buster two out at a time. And NetFlix online. And I have a Ton Of Old DVDS to watch. And Laser Disc. Up the old 12″ ones I get on Ebay.
I really don’t care if there is a 90 day hold.. I will not buy trash.. No big EE Hold them all you want. No big EEE here.
I watch the Old Movies 95% of the time anyway.
And did you see that RedBox has bought the BlockBuster blue Box out…
    More RedBox’s on the way!
