After a long gestation, the Boxee Box set-top streaming device has finally launched. The 9 box, which seems not to be designed to fit nicely into your entertainment center, runs on the same platform as Google TV and can access a variety of online sources such as YouTube, Vimeo and VUDU.

Boxee claims that Netflix support will be available before the end of the year, and Hulu Plus will be coming to the device as well.

At 200 bucks, the Boxee will cost you more than either an Apple TV or a Roku box. How well do you think this “sinking cube” shaped device will fare in today’s hyper-competitive streaming marketplace?

The problem that I see with the Boxee box is that all the people that are/were fans of Boxee wanted the box because it delivered Hulu, CBS and everything else to your TV for free each month. Now the box requires monthly fees for Hulu Plus / Netflix, and apps like ESPN3 will probably be cut because they are delivering it to TVs. This means that the value of paying an extra $100 to get this box are now much lower than before.

It’s the cost of being legitimate, but they lose a lot of their value add.

Don’t know about this Boxee box. I do know for Walgreens Black Friday sale they are offering/selling a Sony Blu-ray 1080 for $99 that also streams Netflix, Youtube, and slacker. My dvd player is on it’s last leg, so I’m considering it even though I don’t care about blu-ray movies, don’t have Netflix, already watch youtube on my laptop, and don’t even know what ‘slacker’ is!

Destined to be a forgetful footnote in the technology failure marketplace. Especially at that silly price point.

Sinking Cube. How appropriate. 5 years from now, someone will send an email with picutres of various devices that you are supposed to guess the function of. This will be one of them.

Let’s see – how can we make sure no one will buy this?
Make it expensive? – check. Make it a goofy shape that will not conveniently fit into an entertainment system? – check. Make it redundant with devices like a game console or a laptop? Check.

As you might have guessed, I will not be buying into this.
