downloadUnlike rival streaming service Netflix, Amazon will not be charging Prime Instant Video members a surcharge to stream 4K Ultra-HD content. Netflix charges on top of its monthly fee for its small selection of Ultra-HD content.

Amazon claims that it’s not worried about the additional costs that come with 4K streaming, which is the reason Netflix has cited for charging a premium.

Michael Paull, VP of Amazon digital video, said the following:

“We’re confident that offering Ultra-HD content, whether it’s a TV series or a film, will help create the ultimate viewing experience. . . We’re excited to unveil even more titles that Prime members and customers can watch in Ultra-HD later this year,”

As consumers begin to slowly adopt the 4K TV standard, are we going to see more content providers following in the footsteps of Amazon, or Netflix?

They got a long way to go.. 98% of the public does not have a 4 K TV.
Two things will need to happen..
    1. The 4 K TV are going to have to drop in price.. BIG TIME.. AND I MEAN REAL BIG.
    2. Way more stuff needs to come out in 4 K.
It will be years on end before 50% of the public have a 4 K TV.
Millions on end still do not have a Blu-Ray player.
Things are still not good. Better a bit. Good no way..
4 K has a long long long way to go yet… And I for one will not change what I have for it/to get it.
    No need..

It’ll be a few years before this is mainstream but advancing content in the format will help. The tech price needs to come way down before critical acceptance happens.

Unless you do a heck of a lot of online shopping, it’s still more expensive than Netflix.

Is Netflix going to feel the heat from Amazon’s decision to offer this Ultra HD content for free?

Content, Content, Content. The key to success.

The tipping point will come in 2017 when *more* programming is watched via the IP stack compared to satellite, OTA or ‘the cord’.
