HBO: A Roadblock to a Digital Future?

One of the major obstacles standing in the way of a massive expansion of the movie download business might come as a surprise to many: HBO. According to industry journal The Wrap, exclusive output deals between the premium cable channel and the Hollywood Three (Warner, Fox and Universal) prohibit download sales while popular new release titles are playing on HBO. The agreement restricts the studios from any sort of digital distribution during HBO’s exclusive pay-TV window, which typically begins six months after a film’s release on DVD and lasts around 18 months.

Last fall, we brought you news that YouTube was considering adding a movie rental service. Word came today that the Google-owned online video giant will be offering online rentals of five independent films from the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. YouTube has also signed a deal with GoDigital Media Group enabling it to offer ad-supporting streaming films, and is reported to be in talks with Lionsgate and Sony.

Rental giant Blockbuster has once again adjusted its expected earnings from the 2009 fiscal year, and the direction isn’t up. After a dismal fourth quarter, Blockbuster is now anticipating a net loss of 3 to 3 million, casting further doubt in the minds of analysts and the renting public that the beleaguered company can stay afloat.

2010 Movies: Q1 & Q2 Preview

2009 was a huge year for Hollywood, bringing in around $10.6 billion domestically and beating 2008’s box office take by more than 10%. 2010 is already off to an even stronger start than last year, with box office receipts up 23% compared to the first two weeks of ’09.

Netflix fansite HackingNetflix recently interviewed Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos. During the course of the interview, Sarandos discussed the company’s reasoning behind the much-discussed Warner agreement, compared the company to HBO and revealed that it was Netflix that initially approached Warner about the new release delay. Fresh from its new release delay deal with Netflix, Warner Home Video is rumored to be in negotiations with erstwhile antagonist Redbox on a similar agreement. According to “sources close to the negotiations” consulted by Home Media Magazine, Warner and Redbox are not yet close to finalizing an agreement, but they are working towards an arrangement similar to the Netflix deal. Under the terms of the rumored new agreement, Warner would provide its new release titles to Redbox at a substantial discount, but only after a 28-day waiting period.

Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes spoke recently at an investor event in San Francisco. The chief of the embattled rental firm touched on many important and timely topics affecting not only Blockbuster but the movie rental business in general. According to Keyes, Blockbuster’s continued existence will hinge on “its ability to position the brand across multiple distribution platforms”.

Keyes also noted that both “new kid on the block” kiosk operator Redbox and by-mail/streaming company Netflix present “formidable challenges” in the coming year. Read the rest of this entry »

Fans of the bricks-and-mortar video store have yet another reason to mourn today, as Oregon-based Movie Gallery is purported to be considering its second bankruptcy filing in two years. The nation’s second-largest rental store chain is said to be looking at a closure of up to 1,000 locations; nearly 40% of its U.S. stores.
