The New York Times recently took an inside look at the service. Here are a few highlights:

Hank Breeggemann, general manager of Netflix’s DVD division, thinks that Netflix’s DVD business is still vital to the company’s bottom line and will remain so for years:

“Yes, we still do DVDs . . . It is a completely different company [from the streaming business].”

“If you cut back on service, you are going to lose your subscriber base . . . What’s interesting is that although the business is in a slow decline, there is still a huge demand there,”

I have three out at a time.. fast turn around… 99% of the time the disc are in great shape when I get them.
I get 18-20 DVDs in the mail every month. Comes out to about 90 some cents a disc. Can’t beat it. And it comes right to the house. And I can keep them as long as I like. No need to take them back the next day.
And I also have HULU with Showtime & Warner Archives. Well worth the $40.00 bucks I spend every month for it all.
Yes I still like my disc in my hand.. As millions do… hope NetFlix keeps them coming for years on end yet..

Netflix would be idiots to give up their DVD’s in the mail business. It’s the ONLY way to get new releases, indies, foreign films and documentaries. Everything on streaming is old except for the very limited new releases (grade C).You can’t get them on Hulu or Amazon either.

Discs (either mailed or vendor box) are about the only option for those of us living in rural America. We can’t stream in a practical sense. Streaming eats up too much bandwidth for our satellite or hot spot internet delivery systems. Fifty percent of the population in the US lives rurally, isn’t that a potential market? Discs are our only doable option.
