hboGenericLogoAfter HBO announced a few months back that it was finally uncoupling its streaming service from its pay-TV channel, many wondered if the company would be cannibalizing itself a bit.

Not so, says Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes.

The over-the-top (OTT) streaming service is reportedly launching in April, and will allow consumers to access HBO content without subscribing to the cable channel. The service targets broadband-only households that don’t subscribe to cable.

Bewkes has dismissed concerns that the new service could negatively impact HBO’s pay-TV market. Said Bewkes on the issue:

“We don’t think that would happen. We’ve been doing [HBO] 20 to 30 years. We’ve seen Netflix in five years go to 35 million homes. It didn’t do anything to [bundled channel households],”

Do you think this is accuracy or hubris on Bewkes’ part, Insiders? When the new service launches, will consumers start to see HBO on cable as less than a must-have?

Until they roll it out and let us know what it costs it is impossible to say. Remember you get HBO Go for free if you subscribe to the channels through your cable provider

One of the uppity ups stated that they wouldn’t undercut the cable price, beside, I refuse to pay $16 for a single channel. They don’t have the content to charge that much.

I could see paying $16 for 1 month, cramming in what i need to catch up on like the latest season of game of thrones etc and then dropping it again for a year. Heck many of their cable subscribers add it just for GoT and then drop it when the season is over
