175_90_NetflixDespite their recent direct access deal, Netflix and Comcast aren’t exactly on each others’ happy list. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings took the opportunity in his company’s recent first quarter letter to shareholders to lash out against Comcast’s attempted merger with Time Warner Cable, which is currently being reviewed by regulators.

Said Hastings:

“Comcast is already dominant enough to be able to capture unprecedented fees from transit providers and services such as Netflix . . . The combined company would possess even more anti-competitive leverage to charge arbitrary interconnection tolls for access to their customers.”

Comcast’s response has been swift and clear:

“Internet interconnection has nothing to do with net neutrality . . . It’s all about Netflix wanting to unfairly shift its costs from its customers to all Internet customers, regardless of whether they subscribe to Netflix or not.”

Who do you think is right here, if anyone? Is Comcast trying to interfere with net neutrality, or is Netflix just being cheap?

Is the glass half-full or half-empty?

BOTH are rattling sabers trying to feather the nest.

Its doubtful the the COMCAST TWC merger will gain approval… AND Netflix will have to raise subscribers’ rates.

The net is the same… Everyone has to pay more. :(

The merger is definitely going through – TWC and Comcast have too much money to throw around. The question is what measures will they have to take to pretend like they’re not a virtual monopoly.

I think the merger of TWC and Comcast should not go thru. If the cable market was competitive, with 2 cable companies serving the same city, Aereo up in all the major markets and allowed by the SC,(Fingers crossed for Aereo!), then MAYBE let them merge, as it is, no competition means higher prices! As for the so-called “interconnect fee” why should Netflix have to pay Comcast extra? The Comcast SUBSCRIBER is paying extra for a certain amount of “megs” a month, if he’s paying for the service, where does Comcast get off charging Netflix extra for services they were ALREADY compensated for by their Comcast subscriber!
