Even more interesting news today on the pending litigation between Redbox and Universal.

It seems that Universal has launched their own entertainment kiosks over in the UK recently, and may be considering bringing them to the US.

These “POP” kiosks are a joint venture with Sony, and will allow consumers to download media direct to their devices as well as purchase DVDs, Bluray discs, and even video games.

While normally I am all for innovation and new technology, I don’t like how they are going about it. This may shed a bit more light on what Universal is trying to do to kiosk operators here in the states: they simply don’t want competition for their new business.

I am glad to hear that Redbox won’t be caving to their new “rules”.

I am very curious to see how this plays out for Universal. I am thinking it probably won’t go in their favor.

These lawsuits are stupid. Redbox should be good. I mean they’ve been around longer then these new places. They just trying to take a piece of the Redbox pie that they don’t deserve.

I would be in favor of a machine where you insert a usb flash drive and download a movie on to it or a flash card and then pop the flash card into a set top box to play on your tv. no more returning the dvd the next day or getting frustrated over a scratched or otherwise unplayable disc. Of course there would be copy protection in place, but with every format, there has been ways to hack and bypass it sooner or later, so i guess we wont see anything like that anytime soon. :(

I’m not interested in that as I’m not technically “with it” and have no “device” to download to. I love the simplicity of Redbox and getting my new release DVDs for a reasonable price. Hang in there Redbox!

Since I’ve started using Redbox I haven’t set foot in a Blockbuster. I love competition and would hate to have my choices limited just because one movie company decided to implement monopolistic practices. In the end it’s just going to hurt them.

    Competition is Good.

Let’s see the price of a rental get to $0.25/night.

    woot, woot.

In all seriousness. I do not think Redbox has anything to worry about when it comes to individual rental machines with even more limited products.

Smoke and mirrors here with this rumor. Never will happen.

I hope that Universal stomps the hell out of the redbox.
