I was just reading a story over at VideoBusiness that I thought was pretty interesting, regarding an ATM maker getting into the DVD kiosk business…
NCR, the world’s largest automated-teller machine maker, has purchased a minority stake in a closely held kiosk maker in an agreement that will add several thousand self-service DVD-trading machines in GameStop, Dollar Tree and other U.S. retailers within the next few years.
As you probably already know, Redbox sells what they call “Redbox Keepers” in many of their kiosks for $7. These are generally previously viewed rentals that are getting older, and Redbox wants to make room for the new releases, so they sell their old DVDs through this program.
These new kiosks (from a company called E-Play) will allow you to take any old DVD you have laying around and the machine will “buy” it from you for anywhere between “50¢ to $13 for a DVD, depending on the title and condition.” After selling your DVDs, you can use the credit you received to buy anything you like from the retailer the kiosk is in.

In addition, the kiosks can be setup to allow rentals, as well.
I think this is a pretty interesting concept, and I would be willing to try it out and see how it works. Its not much different than Redbox, just with some added functionality.
It looks like they will not be coming to my area very soon, but if you are in Georgia, North Carolina or Ohio, you may see some of these kiosks start showing up at retailers in your area over the coming months. For now, there are only about 20 machines at a few GameStop, DollarTree and Exxon locations.

Would you buy/sell DVDs at a kiosk?
An interesting idea indeed. My only concerns are:
1. How does the process work?
2. How does it verify the disk?
3. How are the cases handled?
4. Do you buy just the disk or the complete case and disk and inserts?
I can understand purchasing from a machine but the trade-in part sounds like it might be stripped down (only accepts the disk).
Still it is a very interesting idea and since I am in Georgia I will keep my eyes open.

You scan your case and insert a disk. It gives you a price based on the case you scan.

I’m not really sure. I played around with it, it didn’t seem to know the difference between a blank CD and a movie.
However you get a voucher for store credit not cash.
I guess you can sell it blank disks at a store you where buying something anyway.
3. How are the cases handled?
They aren’t. If you tell it you don’t have the case the machine offers less for the disk, but it doesn’t know if you have it or not. I’m not really sure what it wants to do with them, it has a trash can looking thing next to the machine, to put them I guess. (unless it’s for trash?)
4. Do you buy just the disk or the complete case and disk and inserts?
When you buy you only get the disk not the case. (but likely you can dig a case out of the trash can next to it)
It could work, for awhile anyway, until NCR (or the retailers) figures out they’ve given away prices for a new DVD trade-in for a crappy disk because the people simply lied about the condition of the disk.
What cities are these “keepers $7” located? I know that they are in the same machine, I just want to know where I can find one.
I presumed they were at all machines. Instead of selecting rent you select purchase.
Every machine I have been to here in Lexington, KY has the purchase option.
Remember when AOL used to send you a CD almost once a month? If you saved all of those just keep sticking them in.
