Netflix has been expanding its streaming catalog quickly, with its most recent deal with Epix giving it the ability to stream many Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM titles. Standing in Netflix’s way, however, is a little obstacle called HBO. The premium cable channel has exclusive streaming rights to content from Fox, Warner and Universal, and it’s not going to yield that exclusivity easily.

HBO co-president Eric Kessler has commented recently that exclusivity “has a value of its own” and has implied that his company is not willing to make a deal with Netflix, instead preferring to promote its own streaming service, HBO Go. Thus, at least for now, Netflix customers will be denied streaming access to titles from several major studios, as well as HBO original programming such as The Sopranos, Rome and Deadwood.

Is this a wise move by HBO? Are they just being intransigent in order to obtain better terms from Netflix when a deal is eventually made? Or do they believe HBO Go has enough compelling content that it will be able to stand on its own and compete with the Netflix juggernaut?

I think that HBO just wants to control all the things they can, but I think the wise thing to do is to let a 3rd party do it, via whatever contract terms those two can come up with. And yes, I am sure part of it is HBO wants great terms, which they feel they might not be getting at the moment.

I would be fine if HBO let HBO GO be their main streaming, but then they NEED to find a way to let ALL of their subscibers use it. There is no way for people with Dish Network or Directv to get access to HBO GO, and they need to partner with Xbox or Roku or something like that. Making a deal with Netflix seems like it would be easier and cheaper.

I dont understand the big deal about pay cable or satalite stations anyway.
If you want a movie your better off money wise renting one, half the programing on HBO ect.. seems to be all older repeat movies from the 70’s the 80’s and 90’s to me they are a waste of money. I do subsribe to cable tv but
it’s pretty much a waste of money because if I watch a pay network once or twice a month it’s alot

They should make HBO Go a pay channel on the Redbox. If I could get HBO Go on my Redbox, and that included the latest episodes of all the shows I watch, I would definitely get it.

    I meant Roku, not Redbox.
