Online video continues to grow in popularity, with the latest indication coming from a survey conducted by research firm Frank N. Magid Associates. According to the survey, 50% of internet users are watching video on the web at least on a weekly basis.

The percentage gets even higher as you move into younger demos, with 85% of males from ages 18-24 and two-thirds of all respondents aged 18-34 watching video online every week.

Many Internet users also seem to want to parallel their online video experience to their TV-watching habits, with 38% of viewers saying they are interested or very interested in watching online video on their televisions via a computer connection. 76% of online video viewers are also consuming professionally produced content on a regular basis.

With every day seemingly bringing a new entry in the video-on-demand business, these numbers must surely be heartening for purveyors of online video. How do your viewing habits fall in line with the survey numbers, Insiders?

Interesting but “Video” covers a lot of ground. Basically I watch one or two hours of cable per day, plus the local broadcast for news and such. My “vision” is that you order a download of shows (ala Tivo programming) in advance. It could download in advance. If I could get something like “Deadliest Catch” for ten or twenty cents per episode I would pay that. Right now cable costs me $65 per month. With Redbox and digital broadcast I get minimal real use of cable.

I’m sure the % would be much lower if they excluded porn.

i’ll bet more people are watching movies and TV shows online with the help of a Roku box and may other boxes to come this fall, including Internet ready TV’s
    and all video Game machines.

I picked up a Roku box two weeks ago for my Netflix account and have not watched tv since.

Tons of TV shows and the new ones are in HD including Deadliest Catch…

With the amount of video one is able to watch online with services such as Netflix, Hula, Crackle, and the list goes on and on, the only thing I can see that someone would want to have cable TV for is live broadcast of local news. True some people like just flipping thru channels to find something to watch, but if you use netflix or Hula you can watch what you want to watch, not what the broadcasters want you to watch.

Live local broadcast local news can be seen free with ATSC antenna, so no need for cable here either. The only good reason to have cable is sports since ESPN3 is not carried by some ISP providers like Time Warner Cable.

Keyword: Free. They are watching FREE videos online and YouTube shouldn’t be in your count. The only way digital downloads will ever catch on is if they are .99 cents USD per movie. Figure out how to get the sponsors to pay the other $4 and you’re in business. Otherwise you’ll go belly up like everyone else whose ever tried making money at digital downloads.
