It’s more and more likely that the television sitting in the corner of your room is a web-connected one, according to a new report from IHS Technology. For the first time, more than half of televisions shipped globally in the first quarter of 2016 were web-connected “smart” TVs.
The Chinese and North American markets lead the way, with 80 percent of Chinese TVs and 56 percent of North American units featuring built-in web apps.

Paul Gray, principal analyst with IHS Technology, said the following :
“China and North America continue to experience growth in the share of smart TVs, and the feature is now established in entry-level products . . . It’s a remarkable result.”
Grey went on to say that the availability of quality content in a given market has a huge impact on smart TV sales:
“It’s all about content . . . where the local [content] offering is relatively weak, consumers are reluctant to pay extra for built-in Internet TV services. Good streaming content in local languages remains the key to value in smart TV.”
