Blockbuster’s implosion over the last few months has had a ripple effect that goes beyond the home entertainment industry. California-based supermarket chain Safeway has filed a motion that claims a new round of BB location closures will have a negative impact on its business.

The motion, filed on December 31 in the New York U.

S. Bankruptcy Court, objects to the closures on the grounds that the shuttered BB stores, many of which are tenants in Safeway-owned shopping centers, will “diminish” the reputation of its shopping centers and disrupt adjoining businesses.

Safeway wants Blockbuster to drastically cut back the scope of the “going out of business” sales taking place at its locations where Safeway is the landlord.

From the filing:

“[Blockbuster] could literally transfer a majority of the goods to be liquidated from other stores to the affected … locations, thus disrupting the use of loading docks and non-public access to the affected premises and misleading the public as to the true nature of the liquidation,”

Does Safeway’s concern seem like a legitimate one, Insiders? More importantly, will a judge see it that way?

Maybe BB can countersue stating that if Safeway would like to cover all their bills and help keep them in business they would be glad to stay where they are.

A – I don’t see how that is at all possible.

B – I would say having Blockbusters in your shopping centers diminishes your reputation, but maybe that’s just me.

I think the “cheapskate losers” are trying to tell you something. In case you don’t get it, before you call anyone a loser, look in the mirror.

Well, I can see how transferring/confining all the BB ongoing b&m liquidations from all the Safeway-landlord malls to one location in one Safeway-landlord mall would make the rest of the Safeway landlord malls more presentable/desirable during these ongoing BB liquidations, but I don’t think Safeway has enough of a legitimate reason to win any legal case.

What a joke. Did someone at Safeway say “What can we do about this? Let’s sue somebody!”? Can the employees file a motion saying the closures “diminish” their ability to pay their bills?

Just another example of the abuses of our legal system.

Safeway’s used to have DVDPlay kiosks. Not sure if they switched over to BBE machines or not.

The Safeway stores in the San Francisco Bay Area switched to Blockbuster Express kiosks several months ago. The stores that they own in Texas also switched. Safeway signed a deal a while ago to add Blockbuster Express kiosks to all of their stores. The problem with Blockbuster Express is that they don’t have blu-ray and there are more Redboxes in the area.

Safeway folks are dumb in the front of the store. They kicked out coinstar years ago tried their hand at coin counting. They failed miserably after many years and much wasted money. With block express they once again the have loser kiosk in place and leave money on the table. Safeway execs egos keep them from admitting there mistake and moving forward with the stronger vendor.

Save it, Safeway. If anything, Safeway is better off not having useless companies like Blockbuster nearby.

When I goes to the Safeway we go to the Bolckbustr to see the Movie for when she wants to see it. I ask him to tell me where is it and he says they doesnt has it. I say he have to has for today is the first day for me to get it. He says no, only we are having the new movies after one week every ten times in one month. I say Why? He tells me we are only having the new movie one week Later in one month because our company is having some Bankruptcy and they can not have it because they will close. I says ok I will go to the Raileys for it having the red Box Inside also for my Food costs CHEAPER.

If Safeway is dependent on a BB kiosok to keep them in business, then Safeway is in one heck of a mess. Maybe Safeway should start building a store around a thriving kiosok than rely on good old fashioned customer service and well priced products.
